Question about 1997 Chevrolet C2500
Rather then guessing it's the ignition switch , before replacing it and finding out that it isn't the problem ,you need to get creative doing some diagnostic testing . Or find someone who knows how to . Hooking up diagnostic equipment , professional scan tool , lab scop . looking at power an grounds , transmission electronic control module input's an outputs .
ECT Transmission Sensor ECU Signal Circuit
I really don't think the ignition swith is the problem . Other parts of the vehicle would also be affected , engine , lights etc.... There are complex electronic's involved .

transmission shift solenoid is stuck open this is a common vehicle issue in automatics and not particular to any make or model vehicle 15 dollar part and arm and leg for labor if taken in
heres an idea to try
take out the transmission filter and replace with new one make sure to take not of any metal debry in trans pan this indicates the trans had sheered its gears down and a trans rebuild is needed
the transfilter needs to be changed at a certain milage interval they can get clogged up
there is a kit you buy for your truck at any parts store
its an easy change hour of time unbolt trans pan unbolt trans filter and put new one in
kit comes with new seals less than an hour you can do it yourself
to overdrive you would feel a difference in shift badley if it was that something to keep in mind

If it has over 60000 miles it may need a transmission service, which includes a filter and fluid change, fluid may look fine but if filter is clogged and not picking up fluid fast enough when u give it gas the pump spins faster and forces fluid thru to shift, more fluid is needed to shift into higher gear.than to drive

Hello. Its a common prob actually with all gm , ford cars and trucks. The ignition has whats called a " sidebar". This sticks up and causes this , or gets stuck on, or key wont come out ,or all the above. You will need a new ignition. Checker or autozone has them around 17 bucks..Quinn Arizona
