Honestly, this is not a job to be taken on alone by a "first-timer" without assistance by somebody who has replaced a timing belt before. You have a job ahead of you that would take a skilled "do it yourselfer" that has done it before at least six hours.
There is allot of preparation and parts to be taken off just to get to the timing belt. The radiator needs to come out, and often at least one motor mount needs to be unbolted.
The most important thing is to make sure that everything is set to top dead center (TDC) before pulling the belt, and remains at TDC when the new belt goes on so you do not bend any valves from an offset camshaft.
Surf the web more and you may be able to find the detailed procedure with photos to help you out. A good place to look is the Chilton.com website. Good Luck!

U have a heck of a job ahead of u,u have to take pretty much the whole front of the eng. off, and after u put the new timing belt on u have to make sure that ur eng. is at TDC,Top dead center, and ur marks on the timing gears r lined up..the best thing to do is go to a auto parts store and get a manual for your vehicle, this is a whole weekend job,and u will need the proper tools,Good Luck

My 92 4 runner makes a squealing noise when I turn. It only makes the noise when I start to accelerate in the beginning of turning. If I slow down on the gas the noise stops alot quicker, then if I keep on...

Most likely need to replace you accessory drive belt. However, before you do that make sure the tensioner is bringing adequate pressure to bear on the belt. The squealing is probably the side of the belt slipping in the metal drive pulleys.

Sounds like one of the auxillary belts slipping it may just need tightening up. I think the 4-Runner has two belts one large and one for the steering pump

This light is to advise you that it is due for replacement. If its been done earlier the interval may not have been reset. Any dealer or someone with vehicle diagnostics gear should be able to reset it.

Hi robrtsn,
As you forgot to say what the engine is in your 4-Runner....I'll give you the rule of thumb....if you have a timing chain in your engine, you'll need to check it only if it becomes noisy....If you have a timing belt, the manufactures recommend that it's replaced every one hundred thousand kilometers.....thats about sixty five thousand miles.... I believe that the later vehicles...(those with the electronic odometer fitted) have been extended to one hundred and fifty thousand, but to be on the safe side, I'd replace at one hundred thousand, especially with the number of sub standard parts that are available on the market these days....

Hope that's a help

Best regards Johngee10
