Question about 1996 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

1996 explorer 4.0. The car acted like it ran out of gas and then wouldn't start at all. The fuel pump and fuel filter were replaced. The ingine will fire momentarily with starting fluid. The fuel pressure is around 30psi with the accessory on. I can hear the pump running, but only for a couple of seconds. It sounds like something is grounding over by the passenger kick panel or maybe the starter relay? I was working on it today and heard a new sound, several loud beeps coming from the passenger kick panel area. I read that the car has a valet switch under the drivers dash that will disable the anti theft system. I am not able to locate that switch. Is it correct that the security system is able to ground the starter relay and shut off the fuel pump? Another concern I have is with the ignition. The plastice spins all the away around, it has been like that since I got the car. I also read that the key is coded and it can sometimes lose its connect with the pcm and will it cause this no start condition? Is there a way to disable it to be able to start my car? I feel like replacing the car. HELP

DON"T USE STARTING FLUID ! It sounds like you have spark but no fuel as it runs on starting fluid maybe your alarm system is wired to cut out the injectors it could be the concern. If it cranks over i would say the key is ok!

Make sure you get a fuel pressure reading to know if you need to replace the fuel pump assembly...it should have 43 psi reading. If it is bad the fuel filters need replaced too. A fuel pump should never be ran lower that a quater of a tank because it kills the life of the pump, it acts as the pumps cooling system. Check for spark and see if there are any engine codes like a bad crank signal. Good luck

Have a 1996 ford explorer. It started the other morning just fine and ran good, that afternoon I couldn't get it to start. Changed the fuel filter and it started and ran fine again. Cut it off when I...

first need to make sure you have enough fuel pressure. Hook up a tester and check against the specs. if its too low, then your probably looking at a fuel pump. By replacing the filter, you allowed more fuel to flow. Also, make sure you are getting spark and injector pulse.

2002 Ford Explorer ran out of gas put gas in and won't restart. replaced fuel pump and fuel filter still won't start. Cranks but won't start

Most Fords have a fuel reset button. When you ran out of gas you tripped the circuit. Most of the time the button will be on the passenger side by the kick panel. The exact location should be in your owners manual or your local library or auto parts store will have a copy of one for your specific vehicle.

Ran out of gas, added gas , engine will not pick up fuel checked relay switch, fuel pump shutoff switch in proper position

The fuel system may need to be primed, (the gas needs to be pulled from the gas tank up to fuel rails. But try to turn your switch on but not start. Leave it on for 1-2 min and try it 4-5 times. This may help with getting the pump to get enough of gas to start pumping.

Wont start

CHECK SHRADER VALVE ON FUEL RAIL FOR PRESSURE. IT IS COMMON FOR PUMP'S TO GO OUT. YOU CAN HAVE SOMEONE LISTEN TO TANK FOR A BUZZ NOISE ON KEY CYCLES OR TEST FUEL PUMP CONNECTOR HARNESS FOR POWER. TRY KEEPING AT LEAST QUARTER TANK AT ALL TIMES TO KEEP FUEL PUMP COOL,SOME PEOPLE DRIVE ON LOW AQLL TIMES AND KEEPS PUMP HOT CAUSING PREMATURE FAILURE.
