Question about 1996 Saturn SL

1 Answer

The RPM on my 1996 Saturn runs between the numbers 2 and 3 and stays at the same RPM when sitting idle. Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks for choosing FIxYa and welcome to the site. Check to make sure that your idle control is set properly. It may be set to high, thus causing to have high rpms. If it is correct, it may be your idle control sensor or possibly a map sensor. I would check the idle sensor before the map sensor. Thanks for using FIxYa.

Is it leaking oil around the head real bad? Where did the oil come from?

We don't know, but there was no more oil in the tank. We put more in and drove it home. Sounds like a rod may be out???

I have a Saturn 2002 SL1 The RPM remain at 2500-3000 RPM when shifting gears. After abotu 30 seconds the RPM will come down to 900 while sitting at a light. What would be the best place to start chasing...

Sounds like a dirty IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. It is located on the throttle body. Remove it and clean it throughly as well as the throttle body underside as well where a lot of carbon build up is.

However, since it is such a high idle, check for any vacuum leaks. Check your hoses and lines running inside the engine bay, specifically near the intake. Spray some carb cleaner around while the engine is running to see if you can hear or see a leak. Check the intake gasket as well.

Check your vacuum lines, make sure there is no leaks, and go from there, then all you electrical connection in the engine compartment.
I have a 1996 Jetta Trek Edition, the hoses, and wire harness, are so brittle, any movement can cause hoses and wire insulation to crack.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
