If your transfer case is bad (broken fork, gear, shaft or something) It could engage both the low and the high ratio gears at the same time. The vehicle will not move if this happens even if you put your foot in it and try to power out of it. Two ratios cannot be engaged at the same time. Just by your description, it sounds like something like a shift fork or shaft has broken loose from the selection gear and this is allowing the gear to slide on its own unchecked, randomly engaging and dissengaging ratios. I would have a trustworthy shop take a look right away. Any reputable shop could diagnos a transfer case problem within an hour. The shop should charge 1 hour diagnostic time to tell if it is bad and what needs to be done to correct it. If they need to take longer than that then have them tell you why, and it better be good.

Good luck, and if you have any further questions- just ask!

Usually this is due to a defective sensor in the encoder motor that tells the transfer case control module what gear you are in. when the sensor becomes defective and sends a faulty signal the transfer case module starts irratically shifting the transfer case trying to find the commanded gear. you used to have to replace the encoder motor which is quite expensive but now a new sensor is available, you will want the encoder sensor, and oring seal. pull the encoder out and and split the two halves, you will find 2 gears in there, and the sensor is attached to one of them, replace the sensor, set the gear/sensor back in with the marks on the gear and case lined up and put it back together, wrecking yard encoders are cheap also but usually will not come with an updated sensor in them.

Is my 4 wheel drive mechanical or electriacal 1995 4runner

that's funny, there is no electrical 4wd, its got gears.
all have gears.
what some do is have electric acatuators to shift or just to
engage front locking devices.
who to tell on old car>
1: look, is the front axle with outboard hub lockers, manual; or auto?
bingo 100% mechanical,
under newer cars the front axle (look at it) see motor pump or vaucum
lines that run the auto locking axle.
2: look at shifter, is it a lever, , with linkage to transfer case, bingo mech. if only switches, its electrical.

see FSM
i look for you.
I see manual locking front hubs, (no elect)
and the transfer case?
most are linkage
but there are 2 transfer case options
RF1A (counter gears) or VF1A planetary gear reduction unit. transfer case.
the dash has a simple idiot lamp that means the tranfer
case thinks its in 4wd but never really knows for sure.
its just a switch. i never look at it. i feel my gears at all times
by seat of pants.

Will not go in to 4wd mode at all and service 4wd light is on

Problem is in electrical control.
1. check computer codes.(turn ignition 1 click ON/OFF) do this 3 times quickly leaveing ON. Then read codes by odometer.
2.Check 12v power to 4wd switch at dashboard and tranfer case.If there is power to transfer case the control is bad. Check gear oil there may be a sensor stopping it.

No lights on 4wd dash switch but fuse is ok. Can't switch to 4wd. Does it sound like the transfer case module or transfer case motor

Start with the simple and check the switch it self first. It's know for the the switch it self to go bad and will need to be replaced. The other common area to inspect is the wire harness at the TCCM, corrosion is an issue which can cause no current flow to your TCCM from the switch.

If all electrical systems check to be in 100% running order, good chance it's going to be your encoder motor (tranfer-case motor).

Thank you for using Fixya and keep us posted.

My 2002 Envoy will not shift into 4 wheel drive or anything other than 2WD. The lights are not lighting up on the switch and the fuses have been checked and good. Any ideas?

check the transfer case selector motor, they go bad and thats what happens, no 4wd and no other lights on switch because its not doing any changing of the tranfer case, to test remove motor ground it and with connector connected, try to switch to 4wd see if motor moves, you can use a test light to make sure its getting power, hope this helps.

4wd drive light wont work on 1990 toyota fourunner, will go into 4 wheel drive.

Either the wire is disconected from the indicator switch in the tranfer case, the indicator switch is bad, the bulb in the light is burned out, or you have a broken wire. My bet would be on the switch.
