Sounds like The catalyst converter needs to be replace. This is part of the exhaust system, it filters the carbon and other gasses to reduce pollution which in turn keeps the exhaust from being black.

It can also the the Main Manifold gasket.

In eighter case your car has to get to a garage, this is one that cant be talked through to fix at home.

My brand new 2014 camaro, has had black exhaust tips since I bought it.I feel this is causing poor mpg,and will cause damage to the cat. and premature wear on the rings, and poor mpg.

It's running too rich and all this will do is cause the black exhaust. Get it leaned out. May be only because of a faulty temperature sensor causing it to stay in cold start mode, like keeping the choke on in the early vehicles. Check that sensor.

Only use OEM O2 sensors, and I wouldn't be surprised if your Cat Converter is partially plugged and in need of replacement, as your computer reads air quality and adjusts the burn based on the reading from the O2 sensors.

Did you unplug the coolant sensor near the thermostat when you changed the thermostat?
Check it for a bent/broken pin or a bad connection.Black smoke and a check engine light can be a sign of a possible coolant temp sensor problem.
You should run the codes to check what the van is actually asking for and don't forget to recheck the coolant level after you have driven it a bit,WHEN IT IS COLD!A great van to own!

Take your carb cover off and see if the top butterfly valve is open when engine is warm. If not the choke is sticking. Also be sure your air filter is clean (or new) because a dirty air filter acts as a choke if too dirty.

sorry need to have a play with it to find the fault ,but if this vehicle is playing up why not go green and get yourself a nice peugeot partner van or a ford courier something with a nice 1.6 diesel engine ,50+mpg what more could you want .especially if your petrol prices were instantly risen to our europeon prices and the road tax set at our levels for engines this size

1991 Camry running rich

check for vacuum leaks especially around the intake manifold gasket. Although the engine appears to be running rich, it could also be misfiring due to being too lean in one cylinder. When the cylinder doesn't fire the charge, it goes into the exhaust completely unburned and looks like a rich running condition due to the unburned fuel. If it is a vacuum leak causing the problem, the engine will run fine at road speeds but misfire at idle and not pass smog.
