Question about 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

3 Answers

I own a 1989 olds cutlass ciera. My car stalled on the way home from work. The charge light came on. I've had it looked at, they thought it could be the fuel pump relay, it wasn't. They said it must be some type of electrical issue. I was doing some research on fuel injection systems, which I know my car has. It mentioned some safety features located under the passenger seat, an inertia switch and/or roll-over valve. If these were accidentally bumped, could this cause the car to stall?

Do this before you do anything else. On the 3300 (3.3L) engine, there is a common ground post beneath the air cleaner, under the crossover pipe, on the transaxle housing. It loses contact on these older models. It is among other things, the ground for the ECM, and will stop the car cold. Take the four terminations, which ground a total of 8 wires, loose. Clean it all up, and buff the terminations with some sandpaper to get any corrosion off. Be sure when you're loosening and tightening the nut to use a backup wrench on the hex base of the post itself, or you'll behead the terminations of the ground wires. Snug it all down and you'll be back in business. Be sure to disconnect the battery before doing all this because you don't want to buy a new ECM.
Yes, it's hard to get to. It's no fun doing this. But it is what usually causes this problem in these old 3300's. I blew over $2000 replacing stuff before I figured it out.

No it wont cause the charge light to come on but the engine check light. The problem your describing especially with the charge light Suggest electrical issue, and with the stalling it points to the alternator. try the following

1.) tighten both battery terminals and ensure the battery is secure.
2.) check alternator charging voltage with and without loads (ac and headlights)
voltage should be 13.5 to 14.2 above that is bad as well as below that.
3.) check the tension of the alternator belt and tighten or replace. (most likely in your case)

Verify the above 1 of them is your problem.

Stalls when hot

Try a crank sensor. It's just above the oil pan center between the engine and transmission. Look and see if the old one is cracked.

1989 oldsmobile runs then stalls and a host of other problems

you can get the diagrams from auto zone for the lines and fuel filter; check the drive belt and check for vacuum leaks or if any vacuum lines are off and if you have a battery tester or charger of your own or know someone who does then check the battery yourself before taking to anyone else to ask them to check it again you can pick up a battery charger/tester at Walmart along time ago I had an olds that the starter was drawing power from the battery so this could also be your problem to look for

Need to replace intake gasket 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

I am doing intake gaskets right now on an expedition and you have to look carefully around and take your time and you will find what is holding you up from taking it out because nowhere in the book does it state you had to take the two bolts out for the thermastat housing on the expedition that I am working on you can also go to auto zone and they can give you a diagram because you will need the torque specs anyways
