Question about 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage

2 Answers

I have a mirage 2001 1.8 liter. i ahd troulbe starting it yesterday. It would crank but would not fire over. I tried fro 5 minutes to start it without any luck. after letting it rest for about 5 i tried again i could smell gas so thinkung it was flooded i held the gas pedal down and after a minute it atarted up and after clearing out the raw fule it ran just fine. The only post problem i noticed when driving homw was the engine shift points seemed to have chanhed. they are about close to 10 mph higer i don't have tach but definetly sound like it is over reving going into next gear. also when it slows downs it down shifts a little harsh. I never had a problem with the tranny at all until the starting issue. Any ideas would be helpful until i get it to my friend who is mechanic and is not going to rip me off but help me fix it. Any ideas to speed up the diagnosis. Yhamks rick Just had timimg belt changed about 1000 miles ago

The computer for the tranny has a memory and it may need to be reset that may be the cause of your motor going to higher revs before changing gear. also have the diagnostics to the motor checked when you get it to your friend. Don't leave it to late as the transmission will suffer

Thanks for choosing FIxYa and welcome to the site. As you may know, a vehicle needs air, fuel, and fire to start properly. In your case, it may not even be a fuel issue but you would want to check it out to make sure. You would need to check the fuel pressure on your vehicle and all fuses and relays that are connected with the fuel system, fuel pump fuse, relay, and reset if equipped. You could have electrical problems with the vehicle or it may be the transmission. None the less, it would need to be hooked up to a computer to know for sure. You may have a bad idle control sensor or map sensor that is causing your problems. Since the problem you now have is associated with the starting issue, I wouldn't think it is the transmission. I believe it is an electrical issue or sensor. It is hard to tell though without running a diagnostics test on it though to know for sure. Hope this helps some. Best regards. Thanks for using FIxYa.

Car not starting, battery charged by son's car, still wont' start.

More than likely its your ignition switch going or gone bad. Ok, here's what you do, turn the key to the on position but DO NOT CRANK, let the key stay in this position until the security light stops flashing (takes 5 to 10 minutes) then turn the key off and crank it immediately after. If your car cranks then you will need to replace your ignition switch ($120 to $160). Hope this information helps someone. .

I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage 1.8 liter the spark plugs had oil residue, I had someone clean the wires and replace the spak plugs, now the car will not turn in. What should I do?

when you say 'will not turn in' is this turn on?What happens when the key is turned to start?Does the engine crank over but no start?Or does it sound like it wants to start,or does it backfire and pop as it turns over,or is there nothing at all.Usually the simplest fault is that the plug wires are on in an incorrect firing order. This is 1-3-4-2.It may be difficult to establish number 1 on the distributor(assuming this is a model with one). But I am unsure if your friend removed them completely from it.So lets us start fresh.
1.No 1 cylinder is closest to the end where all the belts are running. They run in series along the sparkplugs 1-2-3-4.
2.Fit all the plug leads so that they fit well between the plugs and the distributor cap.Ensure that the order that they run is in the direction that the rotor spins inside the distributor cap. This model fits to the end of the camshaft so should be anticlockwise.
3.distributor cap may be marked with 1.If so then just fit them in order anticlockwise; this end
4.start vehicle.
5.if there is no 1 mark on cap, easy to just set as above, crank engine,if no start, backfiring or it runs roughly, just stop, move them all around the cap by one but staying in the firing order of will only have to repeat this shifting leads 3 times max if you were really unlucky with getting the order out.As soon as you have got them right it will start fine.
You may still need to find out why they were oiled covered and fix this.Externally it may just be the valve cover gasket.Plugs oiled on the electrodes inside can be worn engine or other factors we wont cover here unless needed.
I hope this helps you start your car,or get back to me with your findings.

1998 mitsubishi mirage wont start?

check if the fuel pump is working, if you have someone near the tank and someone else crank motor you should be able to hear a bzzzzzz rom the tank from the pump. if no noise is heard then hit or thump the tank, this can make a fuel pump start to work again, if it starts, then the pump is almost dead

Crank sensor. Next time it does this spray some water on it and see if it cranks. Its by the crankshaft pulley towards front of car.

Vehicle cranks but won't turn over

First you need to check for spark and if that is okay you need to check for fuel pressure/volume. sounds like a possible bad fuel pump. you can also try hitting the fuel tank with a rubber mallet while cranking. If the van then starts you need a new fuel pump
