Question about Chevrolet S 10
An engine doesn't runs when something is wrong with the fuel or the spark: Either they are missing (or too low to count) or they are delivered at the wrong time.
You need to do some basic checks:
1 - see if the spark is present: take out the lead on one of the sparkplugs, take it out, put the lead back on the plug, secure it to the exhaust manifold with a small piece of wire and turn the engine - the spark should be visible. If not then measure the coils - if no voltage is present then something is wrong in the ECM; if voltage is present then the coil pack is gone - replace it.
2 - the presence of fuel in the injector rail - just unplug the fuel line going to it - the fuel should violently squirt out (use a rag to cover it as to not get drenched in fuel). If the fuel doesnt squirt out then the pressure is weak or absent - check the fuel pump and filter.
If all appears ok then the defect is in the control systems of the engine - you will need to use a code reader to determine if the ECM or a sensor have failed and replace it.

When you have a problem like this there are basic tests that need to be run to sort out what is causing the problem.
1. You will need to have the OBD2 electronic engine control system tested for fault codes, this is the most important test you need to run. This test requires a special tool called a scanner, it plugs into a 16 pin diagnostic test connector that is located under the dash in front of the steering wheel. You can either buy a basic code reader or have a shop run the test. A basic code reader is about $50.00
2.The next test is to see if you have fuel be delivered to the engine from the in fuel tank electric high pressure fuel pump. The quickest way to check this is to just buy a can of spray starting fluid, spray it into the air intake hose of the engine while cranking the engine over, if the engine starts you have a fuel pressure problem, this can be due to a failed fuel pump or a gas tank sending unit that reads incorrectly and you have run out of gas. I have had many cars and trucks towed in for this type of problem, gauge shows fuel in tank, the vehicle is actually empty.
