Question about Jeep Cherokee

2 Answers

I just want to find an accurate and complete list of codes for my 98 Cherokee Classic 4.0 liter 2wd. Just installed ScanGuageII reader and get codes P0700, P0705, P0463. Only P0463 is in the Chilton manual list and "CLEAR" ing all codes does not kill "Check Engine" light. Car runs fine. Previous owner says "Check Engine" wont go off because he had to change ignition switch - makes no sense to me.

Hi, you can see a full list of Jeep DTCs here: http://jsautosource.com/factory-manuals/dtc-definitions/full-list-of-all-definitions-for-dodge-chrystler-jeep-dtc-codes/
Your engine light will probably return immediately after clearing the codes until the P0700 is rectified. The 705 indicates your range sensor is out of adjustment or broken. The range sensor is mounted to the side of the transmission where the cable attaches. It may be adjustable. Normally, when the range sensor fails, the starter will not turn, because the sensor provides the park/neutral safety interlock to ensure the transmission is not in gear. Also, the range sensor usually includes the backup light switch. I usually adjust the sensor by putting the transmission in reverse, turning the key on, loosening the switch, and rotating it until the backup lights come on. Please let me know if you have questions and thanks for using FixYa.

P0700 & p0705 are transmission trouble codes - until you fix the problem w/trans codes are going to remain. Once repaired then you reset the "check engine light"

'98 Ranger, MIL and O/D light on. No codes.

Generic Code readers may not pull codes from the Transmission Control Module. They tend to just be OBD II Global readers (which means they can talk to the PCM and that's it). You probably have a transmission issue but need a better Scan Tool to retreive the codes.

PULL THE TRANSMISSION PAN TO SEE IF THE IS ABNORMAL CLUTCH MATERIAL IN THE PAN. IF EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS ARE NOT PRESENT THAN THE PROBLEM SHOULDN'T BE TOO SEVERE. WAS THE FAULT CODE FOR VOLTS TOO HIGH OR TOO LOW?
