    Not for amateur back yard mechanics. Special tools are required including refrigeration gages and a vacuum pump. If you are in the modern world, you also are required under most federal mandates to recover the Freon. You may not release this substance into the atmosphere.

To convert from r12 to r134a freon, you first need to have the r12 discharged into a recovery system by a licensed professional. It is a violation of federal law in addition to environmentally irresponsible to vent this gas to the atmosphere. Next, remove the drier from the a/c system and use a spray can of a/c system flushing solvent to flush the oil r12 refrigerant and lubricating oil from the system by spraying into one of the liberated hose ends and placing a catch bucket under the other hose end.
You will need to purchase and install a set of adapters for the high and low side access valves by simply screwing them tightly and securely on top of your old r12 valves which are already in place.
After cleaning the system, replace the drier with a new one and reassemble the system. Evacuate the system to a sufficiently low pressure using an HVAC vacuum pump and then add the recommended amount of r134a freon and lubricating oil to the system through the charging hose on your combination manifold gauge set. Assuming of course that you didn't have leaks in the system before you began the conversion, you should now be good to go!

Most a/c units up to 1995 use R12.
Any R12 system can be converted to 134A and will be colder on 134A.

91 Mercedes 300 E has R12 ac system that is no longer blowing cold. A faint bit of cool air sometimes shows up but it can hardly be called cool. Is there any additive out there compatible with R12?


Propane does the same as R12. I don't recommend it though(highly volatile). Best to convert to 134R. Last time I converted an R12 system was about 10 years ago. I would tell you how to do it, but I could get in trouble because you have to vent out the R12 first. I don't even know of a shop that has an R12 unit anymore. Good for you, they still have the adapters to go over your ports and the 134R today is compatible with the old systems oil. No need to change the compressor, dryer, and expansion valve.

Ac problem at idle after converting over to 134a from r12


to convert from r12 to r 134 a the entire system has to be changed
that is condensor, compressor, evaporator, hoses ,the lot because r134a runs at much higher pressures than r12 ( nearly 3 times higher in psi)
it needs different gauges and has different fill connections so that the gasses cannot be mixed
to make it worse the oil used in the compressor is different because of the different gas and is not compatible with the r12
there was nothing wrong with r12 gas but companies and customers were "hoodwinked" into believing that the r12 was bad for the atmosphere and r134a was the answer
just as you have been " hoodwinked" by the person into getting a gas change over without being fully informed of what was involved and why
with r134a gas there has to be a fan in front of the condenser that works immediately the ac is switched on as the temp of the gas being converted back to liquid is much higher because of the higher pressure need to convert it back from gas to liquid
without that fan the system starts to circulate gas and so the evaporation of the liquid at the evaporator in the car is lost and no heat from the car is transferred back outside
what it means is this --- if you can get r12 gas , change the compressor back to an r12 compressor, have the system completely flushed, vacuumed down for at least 1/2 hour and then refill with r12
If on the other hand you have to use r134a because that is the only compatible compressor available then the evaporator , hoses and condenser have to be changed as well and that means a new ac kit basically
find yourself an accredited ac specialist shops and get quotes

R12


Most everything built before 1994 used R12 freon. And you must have a license to buy R12 in most countries.
A shop can convert the system over to R134.

You would need to find out if the system has been converted to R134 or if it is still using R12.
If R12 you would need to have a licensed tech do it, or have someone convert it to R134.

What freon goes in air condition?


This car originally contained R12, if you can find it you can use it. The other option if this has not already happened is you can convert the system from R12 to R134a, which is readily available, all auto part stores carry these kits. R12 AC fitting are threaded and R134a systems have slip on quick connect fittings.

Have a 1986 F-350 A/C puts out cool air but not cold. Don't know if system is R12 or 134A. Compressor is centr and has 2 threaded black caps with schrader valves for gage connection plus 1 quick disconnect...


in 1986 it is r12 but you can convert to r134 which is a ton cheaper than paying for r12 you need a license to buy r12 r134 is right on the shelf at auto zone they also sell retro fit kits with everything you need to convert your system and they work very well

Depends on if it takes R134 A or R12 refridgent. R134A most likley looking around $150 depending on amount of freon the system holds. if its R12 open your piggy bank cause its going to cost you some coin as R12 is no longer in production you have to convert your system to R134A or find a gararge that still has some R12

R12 to R134


You have to have the R12 completely evacuated. This is done at a repair facility that works on A/C. The only thing after that is screwing on 2 fittings to your existing lines and charge your system. Companies make retro-fit kits so the owner can do it themselves. These kits are available at most part stores.
