What would cause steering wheel movement up down and side to side on 97 ford f150 tilt column shift steering column?

Slop in the actual steering wheel is a result of either bad bearings, universal joints, or the brackets that hold it together. Take the covers off of the column and you should be able to see what is wrong with it.

some steering column shifters required the lever to be pulled back to the wheel before the shift could be made (a safety thing). Check for seized bushings or worn bushings that is preventing the movement

97 Ford Explorer Ignition Key Problem - Will Not Start


Did you program the security system to accept the new key ?
It sounds like the linkage from the lock cylinder is worn out to not let the steering wheel lock. I would want to know if the lock cylinder is turning the switch without any extra movement.

Car has Tilt Steering and has play, you can take the wheel and move it about an inch up, down, left, right. My buddy owns a shop looked at it and said it should be safe. He can't fix it until he comes...


The problem doesn't sound like it's in the tilt mechanism. The tilt mechanism wouldn't cause it to have side to side movement. Chack everything holding the steering column itself.

97 f350 steering started getting stiff when my defroster was on ,now two weeks later sounds like popping coming from wright inside my steering wheel and my truck doesnt have cv boots 2 wheel drive


A common problem for these trucks is the upper bearing in the steering column comes apart, hold the steering wheel and try to move it up and down, if the wheel has play in it as if the tilt was being used then its the upper bearing in the steering column.

Gear shift lever in column is loose


your problem with the gear selector is in the item 25 these are 2 plastic bushings that wear out and cause the gear selector feels loose, you should also check the item 27 this item has one or two screws loose and cause the gear selector feels loose

You will have to remove the lock plate and the turn signal plastic assembly, from inside the column housing, in order to access and tighten up the three hex screws that have come loose, allowing the tilt column to move side to side. I have done this numerous times, in the mid 90's, when the 80's GM tilt columns started to come loose with age. The hardest part is getting that lock plate off, and replacing it, if you don't have a lock plate puller, so make sure you have one or else get one, as it will save you lots of time and fustration. It may be the 'actuator'. It is a rod that connects the lock cylinder to the ignition switch on the tilt wheel units. It is made of aluminum and often breaks as things become worn.

Telescopic Steering wheel won't move down - I hear a gear spinning


Open the gear motor on the left hand side of the telelscopic assembly. Take the plate off held by 4 philips screws. Using a 10mm socket, remove the bolt holding the platic gear. Remove plastic gear and insert the reverse way. Over the years, one side of the gears get worn out.
