What have you done so far ?

  • A Miller Mar 30, 2011

Since you are a mechanic, you know there is a difference between a engine mechanic and a trans mechanic - just as there is a difference between a Ford engine mechanic and a Chevy engine mechanic.

I would suspect that since this is sudden onset, there may be crud in one of the servos ... but I am not a Ford Escape transmission specialist. I suspect if you pull the pan and do a routine adjustment/oil/filter change, it will be ok. Since you can do all of this yourself and you probably have the tools, the investment is relatively small. You can always kick the problem upstairs, so to say, if that doesn't do it.

Remember, you paid nothing for this advice.

I change the tranny fluid every 5,000 miles, just found out this has a filter in conjunction with the drain plug magnet where you allow the fluid to drain, this has 140,000 miles +

I am a very maticulious mechanic

If the compter has failed could this be the cause ? The ECM ? How about the power train control module and would these set a code ?

  • Jim Mar Apr 03, 2011

I dont want to chage out the tranny then find out it's a cable adjustment as per the manual.

Pull the transmission pan, any metal? if there is you will need to rebuild or replace the transmission, what has happened is as the clutches ware the apply pistons have to move a little further each tome they apply the clutch pack and after awhile the seals that are on each apply piston get ware cracks and then one day one of the cracks just blows out and then the piston will not move any more and wa'la no more shifting. the metal is a dead giveaway that their is allot of wear in the transmission also the shavings are sharp and will cut the seals.

I am going to remove the tranny pan which is verticle, not horizontal like most trannys, is there indeed a filter ?

yes there is a filter but you have to split the case to get to it, but ther is a magnet on the drain plug that the metal shoud stick to. it might be a silnoid but if it were there should be a code i think that the miles suggest that it will be a mechancal problem. might try some transX you might get lucky.

What is behind the black pan in the front of the tranny looking from the front of the engine tranny ? Can this be the result of the failing ECM or PCM ? I read online that there is a problem with the control module on these cars. Can I access the filter by removing the black front pan to remove and replace the filter ?

  • Jim Mar Apr 03, 2011

After doing tranny filter changes only a smear od metal paste is found each time.

  • Jim Mar Apr 03, 2011

Sorry not filter, removing the bolt that releases the fluid w/ magnet.

most likly not a computer, we rairly see a problem with the computers on the ford this is not to say that it could not be it just very doughtfull, i know you are hopeing for a brake but i think you are just going to have to face the fact that you need a transmission.......sorry.......but if you think about it the transmission has done its job for a long time, 10 or 15 years ago we would have never thought we could get the kind of miles out of these cars now we seam to think thay ought to run forever, but a 100,xxxmiles is still serveral times around the world. be happy and just replace the transmission and be thankful that it has surved you as well as it has.

I would also take a look at the Camshaft and crankshaft sensors. They can be distorted and cause a car to not respond past a particular gear. I just had to deal with that on a 2006 Ford escape. From what I know, the mechanics aren't too different from an 01.

Will not shift out of 2nd gear

Tranny most likely shot. I believe yours is a T-5, I had the same issue years back but in 3rd gear. Usually the clutch going out is a gradual thing. So I would have a tranny shop look at it. Maybe find a cheap rebuilt tranny for ya.Look online or a trusted shop.

It could possibly be a bad electrical connection or poor connection with the transmission. Did the mechanic get any error codes?

3000gt transmission

Hi,
Look on a 3000GT forum (search on Google) to find out how to read the transmission codes. I bet they are stored in the transmission computer. This will tell you what needs fixed.

Also, does sound like the shifter may be out of adjustment. Maybe a cable is broken or loose.

Overdrive light flashes on and off

This will occur if the control solenoids that are located inside the pan on the valve body, are malfunctioning. First, i would check the fluid level. if the fluid level is proper, have the tranny flushed and change the filter as well. If this doesn't fix the issue, go ahead and replace the control solenoids.
