Question about 1991 Ford F250

1 Answer

I have a 1991 ford F250 4x4 w/automatic transmission. The problem I'm having is it will go in reverse great, but when I put it in any forward gear it doesn't want to go. It will go, but it's being restricted in some way. I just bought the truck and it had been sitting for about a year, and before that it was only used in the winter as a snow plow truck. It drove fine for about 5 miles, but as soon as I reached the road I live on I noticed it didn't down shift when it should have. I hope it's something easily fixed because I really like the truck. Thanks for any help you could give.

The fact that it was used for a snow plowing should have sent a red flag to mind, but it seems to be transmission related. My bet is the clutch seal are hard since when you do a lot of plowing and aren't aware of how to take caution with an automotic transmission it is easy to heat them up and this cause a lot of internal damage. You shouldn't have any trouble getting a good trany at a junk yard that would be the cheaper route.

I got a 1990 ford tempo I was wondering why it goes in reverse but won't go forward

Is it standard or automatic, I think it must be Standard because that doesn't happen with Automatics. If you put it in low and it only goes backwards someone had it (The transmission apart) and put the slider in back wards or something like that. Perhaps the forward gears are gone so they wanted to see if reverse works. Maybe you meant when you shift into a forward gear it doesn't work but when you shift it into reverse it does work. There is a fork like gear that moves the gears in and out of high and low range and it might be broken and it is possible if you find it hasn't been ground up in the internal gears it might be welded back in place and be sure to grind off every bit of flux so the gears can work smoothly. Best thing is to go to a junk yard that still has older cars like the Tempo so you can buy the transmission.

Why would a vehicle in reverse move forward

The question is a little vague but I think I know what your referring to. All modern automatic transmissions have torque converters. This is the device that connects the engine to the transmission. All vehicle manufacturers like the trans to be nice and smooth shifting. That's great but it does come with some minor drawbacks. If you are facing slightly down hill and you put your car in reverse but do not step on the gas slightly I can guarantee that you will indeed roll forward. You can eliminate that issue by holding your left foot on the brake while you shift into reverse. Then, as soon as you feel the trans engage, gently depress the gas pedal with your right foot and it will eliminate that forward roll problem.
