Well the o/d light should just mean that your overdrive button is pressed on the shifter, so try taking off and put gas and maybe fuel injector cleaner and then see what happens

I let my 2001 Mazda protege sit for 1.5 months without starting it in warm or rainy weather outside. Started it today and it squealed and smoke came out of the engine. What would be causing this?

It sounds like you either have a very loose engine drive belt or belts (There are 2 on your car ) or more probably some component that is supposed to be rotated by the drive belts has seized up from sitting for so long. There are four different components that are rotated. The alternator, water pump, power steering pump, and air condioning compressor. Disable the ignition system by disconnecting the ignition coil connector and then have a helper crank the engine while you look at the pulleys to see which one is not turning with the rest.

Check engine light will not go out.

On my 2000 and 2001 Mazda, I bought a $39 scanner to see what the issue was, so I knew if I could ignore the problem. Everything runs well, and it was one of the sensors that didn't affect the engine performance so I just ignore the light for now. (last 2 years).

2001 Mazda Protege 1.6L automatic. Knocking pinging noise

Solution 1 would be to diagnose the problem of the low comp in 2& 3 and solve that issue. I would of started w the timing belt 1st. If that didn't solve it,ck head gasket, valves, rings. CK for oil & coolant mixing. Good Luck

My engine is knocking and missing

I think you have run the oil down low or have had a blockage in the oil gallery to the crankshaft.Resulting in the bottom end bearings wearing out.Drain the oil and check for metal particals.good luck!!
