How do I replace the transfer case?

If you have to ask how to replace the transfer case, you probably aren't set-up to replace it. This is a large mechanical item attached to the transmission. For the inexperienced person, it is horrible job to do on the ground/in a drive way. Ideally, the car should be on a lift and will require a transmission jack either way. In addition, fluids have to be drained and refilled by way of a fluid pump.

I would highly suggest you find a mechanic for this job. If you are still wanting to try it, go to your local parts store and get a repair manual for your vehicle (this is a fairly involved process and you need the book). Plan on having at least one friend to help, a good jack, jack stands, ramps (I still suggest an overhead lift/rack), specified replacement fluid, hand pump, hard flat level working surface, a free weekend, and probably a stout beverage for after it is all done! And most importantly, have a back-up plan/somewhere to take it if you can't finish the job

Good luck!

I am thinking about buying a 2002 Nissan Sentra as a comuter car. It is in excellent condition but has 175,000 miles on it. The timing chain has never been replaced, and my mechanic says that there is no...

you can look in the owners manual for suggested maintenance, or call a dealer service department.
you should also look up the parts on ebay, generally for that level of maintenance there are several other things which should be replaced while the engine is torn down, so get a kit which will have new guides, tensioner, gears, timing chain/belt, serpentine belt, and maybe a water and/or oil pump which hide underneath the timing chain cover. you do not want to do the timing chain and pay almost the same labor again to do the water pump six months later. also a good time to replace any hoses which must be disconnected.

the dealer service department can also give you a time figure out of their books as to how long it takes a trained mechanic to do this job. that does not mean your corner repair shop guy can do it in the same time, but you will have some figure in mind. and this could be an interference engine which means if whoever sticks it back together does not get it timed right, you just bought a valve job too. so do not undertake this with a sorta mechanical buddy and a case of beer. been there done that

I need to change the Coolant Temperature Sensor on my 2003 Chevrolet Malibu. I rarely know anything about cars, but the mechanic shops charge too much. Please help. I need detailed instructions or a...

This is a little much to give you the detailed instruction that this job will require. Presuming you have the tools to do this job, go to the library and get the Motor Manual for the 1993 vintage vehicles and review the secion on coolant sensors.

Warning, this may be more than you want to get involved with. If you are not able to go completely through this procedure, the repair will be more costly than the original sensor replacement.

I need a trouble shooting manula for my nissan serena

Most auto parts stores have full repair manuals for every vehicle from either Haynes or Chilton. They're based on complete tear downs and rebuilds of the vehicle by a certified mechanic. Each section has related troubleshooting sections based on the topic. The manuals range in price from $20-$60 depending on the vehicle and brand of book. (Chilton is more expensive but has the most detail) General repairs are covered in the Haynes manuals. Some books need to be ordered but all makes and models are covered. Good luck to you

How much will it cost for a mechanic to change oil pan gasket on my 1998 chevy blazer 4wd big v6 engine?

Gasket = $35 (permatex rubber)
Labor - my manual says 3 hours.
You'll have to be responsible for figuring out the labor price per hour depending on where you are located.
In MI, a garage is about $50/hr, and dealership = $85/hr
CA might be $95/$150/hr.

Parts are minimal on the job - its all labor.
Figure in about $20 for shop supplies... gasket remover, sealant, rags, etc.

Repair service

Sounds like you want to do this yourself. I don't blame you. I fix my own vehicles.
The best and easiest way for you is to buy a Chilton manual for your car at the autoparts store. The book runs about $20
This book is a do-it-yourself bible. It will show you everything you need to know on how to do maintenance and repair on your vehicle.

As for the water pump, it's pretty much a replacement thing. Fixing or repairing it is impossible unless you have a machine shop.
