Probably a bad sensor. Could be any number of sensors, MAP sensor, MAF sensor, Idle sensor, O2 sensor, Camshaft position sensor, Crankshaft position sensor, Throttle position Sensor. Your best bet is to check the ecm (engine computer) to see if any codes pop up, that could tell you where to start, if no codes pop up then I would start replacing those sensors one at a time starting with the cheapest and easiest to get to.

Hope this helps.

2002 Saturn SL1 engine turns just fine but won't start

No starts are usually because the engine lost spark (ignition) or fuel. Check for spark on a plug wire with the engine cranking. If spark is a bright, blue spark, then it may be a gas problem: check fuel pressure, and check injection circuit. Auto stores rent or loan fuel pressure testers. If pressure is not as specified (about 40 psi), suspect a weak or failing pump, or a clogged fuel filter.

Saturn starting problems

u should check the specs on the coolant sensor & ck for vacuum leaks. When u step on the "gas" u are really controlling the air intake, the fuel injection is controlling the fuel. A bad coolant sensor or vac leak will give u these problems also. ck emissions when running. Good luck

Saturn sl2 problems

Have you checked the fuel injectors? Fuel filter? Fuel pump? Sounds to me like you have a fuel delivery problem.

Try the following: remove the airbox and spray some starter fluid into the throttle body while someone else cranks the motor. If it starts for a second and dies, then you KNOW you have a fuel delivery problem. If it doesn't change and still won't start, then the problem is either a bad sensor somewhere (crank position sensor, maybe?) or no compression.

I have a 1997 Saturn SL1. It was running fine during the colder months but now that it is warm doesn't really run at all. I can start it up when it has been sitting for a while drive a few miles but...

1. Start the car and let it run until it reaches operating temperture.
2. Feel the top radiator hose. If the engine is warm, but the top radiator hose is not, the thermostat is stuck closed. Replace it. (be sure to ask for a thermostat housing gasket when purchasing thermostat).
3. If this does not correct the problem:
a. replace both the air and fuel filter b. add one bottle of Sea Foam Fuel Additive (auto parts store will have it) to full tank of fresh gas (add before fueling).
It is also a good idea to perform a routine tune-up which inlcudes the above as well as:
1. spark plugs and spark plug wires 2. distributor cap and rotor (if equipped) (otherwise you'll have coil packs) 3. change both transmission fluid and oil (with filters and gaskets) 4. air filter and fuel filter
If the problem persists, have a diagnostics test performed by a techinician and consider the following repairs/replacement:
1. MAS - mass airflow sensor 2. crank shaft sensor 3. cam shaft sensor 4. O2 Sensor(s)

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

I have a 2001 Saturn SL1. It has problems starting, you have to have the gas pedal to the floor and crank it a couple times, and it will start but smokes and gas milage is terrible. Check engine light came...

Hello: The number one injector could be stuck open. to check you will have to remove fuel rail with injectors attached, energize fuel pump with key off and see if #1 injector drips/sprays fuel. YOU COULD ALSO SWAP #1 AND #2 injector and see if the misfire goes to #2 cylinder.
