Key wont turn: If you have locking steering wheel just (FORCE) turn steering wheel in the direction the tires are turned, sometimes if you turn the steering wheel hard all the way to one side it will be in a bind and by turning the wheel just a bit more will help, may sound silly but just try it. This happened to my son, he had the wheels turned hard to the right and pressure of the wheel wouldn't let the key turn.

If its an 04 theres a button you have to push on the ignition wile you turn the key you should be able to push it with your thumb wile turning the key its meant to prevent children from acdentally starting the viehcle this likely is your problem if you have not solved it allready

We put the key in the ignition switch cylinder and it wont turn. what could be the problem and how hard would it be to replace the ignition switch and cylinder on a 1996 pontiac sunfire

It could be numerous problems, the battery, alternator or starter, If its making a clicking sound its probably not the battery. But if its not making a sound at all then its more then likely the battery

Pontiac Sunfire '95 wont start

Sounds like the ignition switch has gone out. Take a service manual and follow the instructions on testing the ignition switch.

2001 pontiac sunfire wont start just keeps turning over light on dash board that looks like a lock keeps coming on don't know what this is. Fuel pump is working.

on a similar problem i had occured it is the theft lock that GM uses. You have to put the key in the ignition turn to ACC wait ten minutes and turn it off. You MUST do this three times and then the theft lock will turn off. Once that is out of the way it SHOULD start.

96 pontiac sunfire wont start.....

Starter solenoid , or wire that leads to it.

Also , if standard transmission , may be the switch on clutch pedal is intermitant.

Engine won't turn over unless it thinks you have your foot on the clutch.

2001 pontiac sunfire wont start

I have had the exact same problem. There is an ignition lock that probably went off. There is a fuse box under the hood. The fuse that says ignition on it pull it out and put it back in. This should reset the ignition lock. Its a safety feature because the car thinks that someone was trying to tamper with it.

1997 pontiac sunfire key wont turn in ignition

You will have to have the ignition cylinder replaced in the car. The only thing that keeps that ignition from turning is a little tang on the sdie of it. The only way that tang moves is by the tumblers inside the cylinder moving it. They will have a hard time replacing it too as they can't remove the cylinder from the bore until it is in the "run" position. Obviously there are ways to get them out but it usually involves using half the tools of a good tech's toolbox. if it is towed the towtruck driver will have to use dolly wheels or remove the shifter cable at the transmission to get it to move as it will be stuck in park- unless is a standard shift.
I am sorry for the bad news. Get a second opinion from somebody that can put their hands on it , but it sounds like you have a tried all or most of the tricks.
Good luck...........Scott
