Thanks for choosing FIxYa and welcome to the site. Seems to me that the starter isn't getting enough power to turn properly. Check your battery and make sure it is good and holding a charge. Inspect it for any signs of moisture. If it starts with a jump, it is not the starter. Make sure you terminals are cleaned and the ends have no play in them. Make sure they are tight. You can still check to make sure you have no loose wires on the starter but it should be because the battery. If you have any questions, let me know. Thanks for using FIxYa and have a good evening.

Try changing the electrical switch on the back of the ignition lock or at least test it with a multimeter to see if you have power coming from the connection for the starter motor relay

Hi there skate4life! The two thing that could be causing this is the starter or the ignition switch in the steering column. If you have a test light turn the ignition switch to the "on" position then test the hot wire on the starter. If it lights up the starter is bad. If it doesnt light up it means that the ignitions switch is bad and is not sending power to the starter. i hope that this sheds some light on your situation. Please leave positive feedback if this solution helps.

Have a good day!

1999 Pontiac Sunfire 5 speed won't start. Replaced spark plugs and checked ignition coil (fine). Sounds like it wants to turn over but makes a "whining" noise. Please assist. Thank you!

Is the engine turning over with the key in the start position? If the engine is not spinning over and you hear a whining noise, the starter is not engaging the flywheel. If the engine is turning over with the starter engaged, the engine has most likely jumped time that creates low or no compression which results in the whining noise.

I have a 2002 sunfire... and i have trouble turning it on. Once it startes it is stuck there because it will not turn at all. Once it is in this position the wipes wont work, the windows wont roll down,...

sounds like you need a new ignition, reason nothing works cause once it doese turn over n starts the car the tumbler is stick in the starting position jus not far enough to keep the starter engaged but far enough the it still trying to go trough the start process which cuts the power to everything else till the ignition returns to the on postion

did you try jus turning the ignition far enough to when the starter engages jus let go of it so the car doesnt start and see if everything else still doesnt work if it dont i belive its the igniton

also with out starting it or engaging the starter as in just turning the key on to get power does anything work?

When turning key starter turns over but not engaging

if starter just spins and does not engage flywheel. it is usually the starter solinoid not kicking it out. when energized the solinoid, if good. kicks the starter gear into flywheel to turn engine over to start it. good-day !

1997 Pontiac Sunfire 5 speed 2.2 L engine What would cause starter to stay engaged trying to turn car over even when key is not in ignition?

The soloinoid is getting power from somewhere to enable starter to try to start vehicle. Could be a short to the starter.

Starter makes weird noise dosent turn over

Starter drive not engaging fully . Sticky or worn, but don't think changing thermostat had anything to do with it. Try having starter drive inspected & lubed if possible , but you may end up with new starter.
