Battery dies after car is cut off


-Battery's life is last only 5 years. Need to replace after 5 years.

Battery charge system light is on


likely your alternator check for voltage at the battery when running it should be 13 to 15 volts . charge your battery with a charger test for voltage when turned off it should be around 13 volts if the battery is good

Starts and runs fine but kills the battery after about a week of replacing the battery.


Your alternator may not be putting out enough. Take it off and have it tested. If you have a digital volt meter you should have just over 13 volts at idle and at higher RPM top out around 14.4 volts at the battery.
You may also have something draining the battery. Is there a large strong spark when you make the last connection (the negative should be hooked up last)? You may get a light, small, faint spark from the ECM drawing power.

I think I have an alternator problem? The charge needle on the dash guage is spiking to 16 volts off and on. I put a voltmeter to the battery and it is only charged to about 11 volts. With the engine...

The normal charge of alternator on idling is about 13 to 14 volts. 12 is acceptable but keep in mind it will need attention soon. The needle fluctuates due to the revs of the alternator - there is nothing to worry about. Just look that the charge is always above 12V on idle.

I have a2001 Saturn SL and the battery light came on,Ireplaced the battery and had the Alternater checked but the battery light stays on. Advance Auto Parts said the alternater is not chargeing


Battery light usually means the alternator is not charging, get yourself a multimeter, select Volts, put red probe on positive and black probe on negative while the car is running, it should read above 13 Volts, not higher than high 14s, if it reads 12 volts or lower while engine is running than your charging system, alternator mainly, needs attention, any decent mechanic can check this in 2 minutes.

Try your alternator check it with a volt meter to see if it is charging the battery. Check the wiring make sure there is no wires of or lose or broken.

Have you checked to see if the alternator is charging ? Run a volt meter on the battery with the engine running, have to have more than 14 volts. If 13 or less, then replace the alt.

Car died while i was driving it


Your alternator is not charging at full amps.

Your alternator could be OK:
1. It could be a loose fanbelt ($12) that runs the alternator pulley.
2. The fanbelt may be dirty or have a coating of oil on it.
3. Replace the alternator fanbelt if either of these (or similar) is suspected.

Your alternator ($80) could be bad:
1. Take your car to an Auto Supply store (AutoZone?).
2. They will check the alternator in the car for free.
3. Call ahead to make sure the store will check it (free)
4. I think Sears Auto also checks it free.

Have you tried monitoring the voltage across the battery with a meter while trying to start? You can buy a digital multimeter for <$20 US at electronic stores (such as Radio Shack in the US) or even auto parts stores. If you have a Harbor Freight tool outlet near you, they are even a lot cheaper and you will be glad to have one when situations such as yours occur.
You gave the battery voltage as '.13' VDC so you may already have a meter but I don't think you wanted to write that you have 13 hundredths of a volt, did you? 
The nominal voltage of a charged battery is 12.6 volts and normally falls ~ 2 volts when the starter is running.
Fuses: the can have a break in the element that is close to invisible so use a meter to measure each one of the higher amperage fuses for continuity on the Ohms or diode scale to make sure.
Some change in the way batteries are made have made them behave strangely; I have had several batteries that will not charge even with 20+ volts across them. They draw only milliamperes and that is not charging. I suspect they build sulfates more readily than in past designs.
