SOURCE: Rough shifting automatic transmission on Honda Accord from 1st to 2nd gear

it has a problem with the second gear drum it cracks and does not fully engauge the n shifts to 3rd ..many honda owners also learn the 8 bucks a quart is the only fluid to pour in a honda..but remember 3 qaurts per drain and fill the tranny holds 7q ....it will take a case to do a drain flush...a high pressure flush will ruin a automatic tranny with alot of miles or metal deposits floating around inside..DRAIN AND FILL 3 QUARTS AT A TIME NO GASKET NEEDED ITS BUILT AND DESIGNED LIKE A MANUAL TRANNY

If it won't shift down to 1st when you come to a stop but you can shift it down manually its probably the tranny computer located under the carpet on the frnt passenger side floor. 1991- 1993 had weak electronics in the computers go to a junkyard and get a new one. if not the right symptom refer to comment 1

The transmission is hanging up in 2nd gear and not shifting to 3rd, 4th etc. It does not downshift to 1st when the car comes to a stop. I can manually downshift to 1st, upshift to 2nd, but it will not...

The absence of 3rd and 4th is imposed by the transmission computer as a precautionary measure. The system has detected fault and rather than risk doing any greater damage has provided a limp home service. It needs to have a transmission specialist look it over and read the error codes. How do your transmission fluid levels look?

Automatic Transmission shifting problems.

i had the same thing...It's the transmission. It's REALLY noticeable shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. I was able to get my transmission fixed for 900 bux. That wasn't even a replacement so i can imagine how much it would cost to get it replaced. The shifting will get worse. By the end of my "experience" it wouldn't shift from 1st to 2nd for about 5 minutes until i drove it around for a bit. THen it would "warm up" to the idea of shifting to 2nd gear.

I have a 1991 accord lx. Was only functioning in

No, those sensors are seperate from transmission, should be a solenoid that is electrically controlled inside the transmission that controls the shifting.

I have a 1998 accord 4cyl coupe manual trans. The

A clutch issue youtend to have more of an engagement problem with 1st and reverse gear for a small time period before you notice other gears. You want to check the clutch hydrolic system for any leaks(clutch slave at transmission, clutch master, which you look for leakage on interior above clutch pedal)and at fluid resevoir.you also want to double check condition of trans fluid. strongly recommend using only HONDA BRAND MANUAL TRANS. FLUID when doing maintinance, fluid should be replaced every 30k on this car.The Honda brand fluid is like night and day on these cars,it WILL make a difference in shifting!!TRust Me on this point! Sorry now back to your main clutch issue, when driveing and you go to shift gears and normally notice grinding, with clutch pedal in shft out of gear and before engageing it into next gear do a double pump of clutch pedal then see if when continuing to next gear if it engagees smoother.if so you know you have without a dout a clutch pressure plate/disc problem. I can tell you that in twenty years the only manual transmissions themselves that ever had problems were due to outside influences(gear oil in transmission, improper driveing, etc.)let me know what you find and we can go from there..JOEL
