Question about 2004 Ford F150

1 Answer

I have a 2004 f150 triton. it has always has that "ticking" noise that is so common in the 5.4. It has been well cared for, all fluids are at a good level. It was sitting for 9 months just driven every 2 weeks to keep battery alive. Then on one of those up to the store trips, i heard a MUCH louder distinctive KNOCK.. not a tick. Nothing different occured with vehicle, no abuse overuse or non maintenance other than sitting. any suggestions?

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. I would say it is a rod in the engine making this pecking noise. The engine usually makes this noise when low on oil also. Since you have stated the fluid levels are good, I would say it is possibly that. 9 months is a long time for gas to sit also. The fuel is probably bad. I would suggest using some injector cleaner in the gas tank with some fresh gas. It may be the problem. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Thanks for using FIxYa.

My 2004 ford f150 triton registered a transfault with o/d light flashing I now only have 2nd gear, reverse and no o/d of course. This happened all of a sudden, and the fluid level was ok

Hello, You can try to unplug the connector at the trans. Clean it with WD40 and reconnect it and see what happens. The truck you have does have 5 TSB's for issues with the PCM. You may want to have the Dealer run the Vin# to see if there is a software fix for your truck.

This is not an official Recall, but the service may be authorized as a courtesy fix. The transmissions put into the trucks have a row of shift solenoids that are electric. They are controlled by the PCM and a solenoid can be deactivated by a faulty PCM.

I have a 2004 F150. It has always had a slight ticking noise from the engine. This noise has just gotten louder and now there's a steady popping noise from the intake manifold and it's running rough. I'm...

The clicking noise could be the cam phasers, there was a TSB on repalcing them.

The popping noise from the intake, did you have the recall done ? This is recall 08S05 - Brake Booster vacuum hose replacement.

I have a 2004 F150 with the 5.4 triton. The other day while driving on the highway with no warning it lost power and quit running. We have gone through the fuel system and have good fuel, other than...

Check if all your ignition coils are firing!! Typical issues are: Sputter/****/misfire under load (foot on gas pedal), stalls, no spark. On these 5.4L, moist and other fluids tend to short the coil out. This is caused by poor design of the coil boots.
