Question about 1981 Chevrolet Corvette

1981 Corvette will not start

Car has been in garage for a year. When it was running, starter solenoid would overheat and car would not start until cooled down (about 30mins). Had starter tested and solenoid was bad. Put in a new battery and starter/solenoid. Car will not crank. Read 12volts at solenoid (battery) terminal. Shorting two solenoid terminal...nothing. Removed start lead from solenoid and connected voltmeter. Turned ignition to full start, reads 11.6volts with lead removed. Pamplet that came with starter says jumper neutral safety switch. (is switch located inside console?). Or should I be checking something else.

Electrical issue, 1972 Corvette. Last fall the car had a short (don't know why), blew the fuseable link at the starter and the battery lost at least one cell. I've replaced the battery and link. I can get power at the starter solenoid (verified with a screwdriver across the terminals), but I have no power at the fusebox. Nothing works, lights, ignition, etc. Is there another fuseable link I should be looking for? Any other ideas?

The neutral safety switch is located in the shifter housing.

Here is a link to a good article on this topic, that would beat an explanation from me.

Yes, it sounds like the NSS is the culprit.

SOME SWITCHES ARE INSIDE THE CONSOLE AND SOME R ON THE TRANS ITSELF. YOUR TIMING BELT MAY BE WORN DUE TO THE FACT THE CAR WOULD OVER HEAT COULD HAVE BEEN DUE TO IMPROPER TIMING. THE STARTER SOLENOID WOULDN'T NECCESSARY OVERHEAT BUT THE ENGINE ITSELF WOULD OVERHEAT THE WHOLE STARTER AND SOLENOID ITSELF DUE TO THE IMPROPER TIMING

My 1981 Corvette will cold start, but when I try to restart it, it won't until it cools off.

sounds like you may have an over fueling problem. check for a leaking carb allowing fuel to run into the intake after shut down. have you checked to see if your missing spark when this happens. if not check if it could be a distributor component problem or coil.

I just bought a 1981 corvette. Last owner said it needed a starter, so I have at my local garage. He can not get the starter to line up right. Thought he had the wrong one try another one. What might be...

A lot of replacements made in China are cheap but do not meet the exact standards for form, fit and function. Suggest going to GM dealer for parts.

I have a 1971 corvette with a 454. The starter is new/rebuilt from GM. It started fine no problems for about 20 or so starts. The last time I went to start it, turned the key, dome lights dimmed, nothing...

A couple of things to check..

Since you did not have your starter rebuilt.. you may have gotten hold of post 75 starter.. there are differences.. the pre 75 have heavier windings and the copper tab to the solenoid is in a slightly different location. Also there should be a heat shield on the solenoid. You didn't mention if this happened after the car was hot or cold..

If this occurs when cold.. remove the starter and check the armature shaft.. it could be fractured.. it will work on the bench just fine.. but eventually under load.. will fail..

Obivously check all connections..cable condition.. and especially grounds.

Lastly.. it is not unsual for the auotpart store books to cross reference the wrong starter for these big blocks.. some starter replacements are often wrong for the year/motor and will extend the starter gear too far...

Good luck

1982 corvette. after setting off alarm, reset the alarm and now the starter won't engage. Why doesn't the relay that deactivates the solonoid reset?

because the car thinks its stolen you need to goto a garage i dont think a keyless entry was available on it so that wouldnt help

Battery light stays on

Many possibilities but the alternator is a good place to start, if its plug is loose, then the green relay inside the center console just to the left and slightly in front of the emergency brake will be clicking in connecting and disconnecting the battery( one loud click per time). It will need replacing or simply disconnecting works for the short budget.
