Question about 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited AWD 4.7L. At idle oil pressure is good but while driving and accelerating oil pressure goes to zero. It was a intermittant problem before but now does it on a consistant basis. I already replace the oil pressure sensor and perfomed a enging flush to no avail. My next step i think would be to remove the oil pan to see if I have sludge build up on the pick up screen, or am I wrong. If there are other ideas that are less time consuming or cheaper I am all ears.

Hi

Oil will thin very quickly with heat and reduce working pressure. do check oil level is correct ( too low will have oil working harder to cool moving parts and thus absorb more heat and get thinner)
check correct grade of oil is being used. Change the engine oil and filter. Clean the oil pressure sensor lead and put heavier oil in it like 10w30 run the engine and see what the pressure does. If it gets better then change the oil and filter again after you drive it 500 miles as there still could be some water in the crank case thinning the oil. There could be several mechanical reasons for low oil pressure such as a bad oil pump (not likely), clogged oil lines/ports, worn main bearings, clogged return oil ports from the heads. None of these last things are cheap to fix. However, if it's a motor with clogged oil ports (thick oil, thin oil, gunk on the inside of the valve cover, etc) there are products that will disolve it that you can flush the motor with and then change the oil. This 'fix' can sometimes cause more problems to crop up and should be used as a last resort.

Please get back to us if you have further query else please accept the suggestion.

Oil pressure gauge goes to zero and check engine light comes on but oil pressure is fine

If the oil pressure switch shows zero, how do you know its fine? If the oil level is correct in the engine, it may be a faulty wire / connection or it could be that the oil pump is failing

Oil pressure gauge drops to zero sometimes when idling. When gas is pressed to move the needle goes back up. It does not do it all the time

Could be the sending unit or an actual problem with the engine.
The oil pressure will be lower at idle than at road speed but should stay above 20psi.

I have an '01/'02 Grand Cherokee Laradeo, when I slow down the oil pressure drops to zero, when I accelerate it goes back up. There is a quiet knock as well, this just started happening. Pleas

If there was no noise when it went to zero I would replace the sending unit by the oil filter for a few dollars. If it is a light ticking and it is all the time I would replace the bad lifter but if it is more clanking or thumping you have problems. If you disconnect one plug wire at a time and run it for a few seconds and the noise goes away that cylinder has a bad connecting rod bearing. I would pull the oil pan and replace the bearing. Or just replace crank and connecting rod bearings and get rid of it

What does it mean when the check gage light come on and the oil pressure hand goes to the zero mark? I have a 2000 jeep grande cherokee limited with 124,000 miles.

Either the oil level is very low or the engine bearings have failed (assuming the gauge is accurate) if the engine isn't making noise and the level is full have a mechanical gauge installed to check actual pressure. if good, the sending unit or gauge is faulty.
If in doubt, do not drive or run the engine 'tll the problem has been diagnosed.

My 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited is reading low oil pressure but wen i accelerate it goes to middle pressure but then down to low wen i stop wat can be the problem?

Oil pump or other issues
Cam bearings,etc
Bad sending unit

I would put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on it,to verify oil pressure.

Certainly stop driving it ,until you find and repair

Oil pressure gauge reads normal when first starts. as it warms up, gauge goes to zero. If I rev engine, gauge goes back to normal.

Two things...when it reads zero, is there any engine noise (tapping or knocking)? After you rev the engine does the pressure read normal at idle and function normally, or does it go back down? Either way, you should not drive the vehicle 'till you have a mechanical gauge (yours is electro-mechanical) put on there and the actual pressure is tested. The condition may be a bad sending unit, a bad bearing or possible obstructed oil pump screen. The repair is obviously different for each one and the price is as well.

1999 jeep grand cherokee losing oil pressure

This is not necessarily an issue, but normal physics. I suggest remove your transducer and test with an external, known good, gauge.... Be sure the vehicle is at normal operating temprature....that will give the lowest pressure reading, as compared to cold engine.
