Ignition failure Ignition key at position III results in hiss and no starter motor hiss. Checked: battery - functions normally and doesn't dim lights when key turned. oil - level just below max coolant - sufficiently above minimum key - all functions work (locking, unlocking, headlight 'finder')

Thanks - I tried in Park & Neutral.

I don't think its the inertia switch as the locks weren't affected, but I shall try that tomorrow when I return to the vehicle.

I'm guessing the key code has malfunctioned?

well, my wife put the key in and turned it. No starter turning. I ran diagnostics found S421 code. Turned key to off, put it in and it has been starting since. It has a new batttery, tight clean battery cables and diagnostics show 12.2 volts with do dimming of lights when it did not start.

My 2000 S10 will not crank,it has new battery & alternator, when the ignition is turned on I get all dash lights but won't turn over. The light around the odometer dims when I engage the key.

You need to test the start wire at the starter when the key is turned to crank position to make sure it has power during cranking. Sometimes tapping on the starter motor with a hammer while cranking will engage a bad starter motor

Corsica won't start,

Start by checking the battery cables for corrosion at - to motor and + to battery. If all cables are good It will be the starter. the lights dimming while turning the key is normal. PS you can also give the starter a few good whacks with a hammer then try to start it.

My1997fordareostar van will make a clicking noise but i still have all power in battery what is the problem

A click every time you activate the starter motor generally tells us that the solenoid is working fine, but that the starter motor is faulty and requires repair/replacement.

To just double check:

Turn on the headlights when cranking.
If the lights dim significantly, then the battery doesn't have enough charge to power the starter, and the battery could require replacement.
If the lights don't dim by much, then the issue is most likely the starter motor.

Trouble shoot a 2007 honda crv starter

Take the starter off for testing. If the lights were normally bright, and went dim when key was in cranking position, it means the start circuit is working-battery power is going to the starter, but it won't do anything. The starter motor is probably bad.
Good luck.

In older cars, the natural wear and tear on a vehicle can lead to ignition switch failure. If the switch is failing, you will probably not hear any clicks from the main relay, which fires the ignition. Check the behavior of the dashboard lights if your vehicle stalls. Alternatively, when the key is first turned to position two, the oil light, brake light, charge light and other warning lights will not function. You can try a test to check the integrity of the ignition switch by turning the ignition key to the 'start' position. As soon as it tries to start let go of the key. Allow it to snap back to the 'run' position and note warning lights. If they go out as the switch snaps back then the switch is faulty. if faulty it will not let power through to the starter to start car. check all fuses first. but sounds like switch.

Turn ON headlights and try to start car.

Headlights stay lit, no change in brightness means an open relay.
Start car in Neutral, or move gear shift in and out of Park and try to start in Park; otherwise it is the ignition relay switch or the starter solenoid.

Headlights dim slightly: Low battery charge

Headlights dim significantly or shut off completely: Battery cable connections are really dirty. Remove cables from battery and clean cable clamps and battery posts. You may not need to boost to start.

Hope this helps!
