What's the deal, I have the same problem. I've oiled the bottom latch and have tugged, pushed, jiggled, to no avail!

  • Beachbalm Oct 22, 2008

Me too. Have the door panel off, have replaced the stupid plastic handle, have adjusted etc so the top latch opens, but the bottom latch will not. And I cannot get the door open even leaning on the door while pulling up on the latch rod manually. I can't tell if the bottom latch is broken, or frozen, or if the whole bottom of the door is rusted shut. Any suggestions?

    same exact problem

  • cubotis Oct 28, 2008

Yeah same problem here... Hopefully someone figures it out...

I don't have the same problem YET! But my stupid plastic handle has broken repeatedly. I found a place on line that has a modified aluminum handle that is a lot cheaper than the factory built one. Go to Hopefully this will help with the broken door latch problems.

Not the problem. The bottom latch is frozen - stuck - unrelease-able. I have had the panels off, and tugging at the rods directly does nothing but aggravate me and get my hands dirty: it does not (not not not) open the latch. My question is, how do I get the bottom latch either open mechanically (like, stick a screwdriver here and do something) or forcefully (like, apply dynamite with duct tape and run). Thanks for trying, but: how do I get the bottom latch un-frozen?

Same problem here. I finally got it after soaking the bottom latch with WD40 for a week. I ended up cutting the bottom rubber seal OFF below the latch. With a BMF screwdriver and hammer and three opened. The bottom of the latch has an "L" shaped metal guide-this is not the latch. Beside that, towards the rear of the truck, is the latch. The bottom part of the latch must be forced towards the cab and upwards at about a 45 degree angle. After removing the part I could see that it couldn't be unlatched from the inside no matter how much lubricant, heat, cussing or beer drinking I did. TOTAL COST: Latch-about $58 dollars (dealer item only)
Rubber seal- $25 or so

I literally just fixed the third door a half an hour ago on my 2000 zr2. first thing, take off the plastic door panel(don't forget the 2 bolts for the belt) it's really easy. don't be afraid to break anything. the fasteners are metal and they squeeze in(as well as out). at least on my truck. after the panel is off, you can see the latch mechanism. load it up with wd40(10-15 seconds should do). let it sit for about a half an hour. pull up on the lever that would be connected to the handle, or pull on the handle if you still have it attached. keep it pulled. you may need someone to do it for you. next, pull on the bottom of the door(the way it's supposed to open). make sure you still have the handle or lever pulled while doing this. you may have to work at it. i had to. i now it sounds kind of easy and rediculous, but it sure as hell worked for me. i just bought the truck yesterday. the guy who had it before me couldn't get the door open. he let it sit for too long without using it. it became rusted.

The 3rd door handle is plastic and needs to be replaced. Very easy to do. Remove the 2 screws holding the seat belt straps. The iner door panel needs to be pulled away from the door. This will expose the iner door locking assem. Unscrew the two screws holding the door handle, You will find that the bottom holder broken. It is a dealer item about 30.00 bucks. If you can't open the door, remove the door handle first, reach in the hole and pull the upper and lower rods to manually open the door.

How do I removed the tailgate door liner panel on a 2005 Suzuki Grand Vitara JB?? There is no inner door latch to be removed. We cannot open the rear door as outer handle has broken. Help....many thx

The top bezel pops off. There are usually 2 screws to remove from the top of the bottom bezel on each side. start popping the bottom bezel off the hatch. It won't come out. Screws on the bottom. But you can get if off enough to reach down and grab the latch rod or latch to release the hatch. Yes the latch is at the bottom. And it has levers to move to open the hatch. Once open, remove the screws to remove the bezel, then replace the latch.

2005 dodge Durango rear door hatch won't open. how do I fix this?

Most of them I fix, the latch is bad. It's electrical. Some times it the wires. Usually the wires break at the top where the wires go from the door to the body. First climb in the back and see if there is a plug at the bottom/center of the door panel. If there is, remove it and use a screw driver, go left to right and catch the latch arm to release the door. If not, them remove the upper door panel around the window. It pops off. Start at the sides, the the top. Remove the screws on both side of the bottom piece(hidden by the top piece). Then pop the top of the bottom piece off. You wont get it out because there are screws on the bottom. Then you have to reach down and find the release arm and open the door to finish taking the panel off. Remove the bolts for the latch and replace it. Check the wires first. You will need a volt/ohm meter to check for power and ground.

99 ford f150 extended door doesn't open. It seems that the latch on top of the door is stuck or disconnected from the handle.

Remove the interior door panel this can be done with the door closed. peel back the moisture barrier, look inside the door and you will see a latch mechanism with two cables next to it, the top cable releases the top latch and the bottom cable releases the bottom latch, the top latch cable is probably not mounted to the latch (anchored) you will probably have to replaace it with a new one, then it should work fine. Hope this helps, let me know

Rear door won't open

You can get the panel off with the door closed. I just took mine off because of the same problem. The top portion is only connected with some clips inside the panel. Take the screws out of the rear side window first. The panel will pop off if you gently pry with a flatbar. under the panel are three screws. Remove the screws and lift up on the bottom panel. It comes right off. Find the cable that goes to the top latch and pull it. It should release and you can replace the door latch assembly. Mine were both broken and I am in the process of fixing them.

F150 third door top lock won't release

there's a cable that runs from the door mech up to the top latch, need to pull down on this cable to release the top latch. Only way I could pull down enough to release was through the hole just left of the opening for the mech...cable is attached to the door frame with plastic tie wrap...pop this out so the cable is free in there and then just pry down with a screwdriver...make sure your pulling the handle at the same time. Once the door is open, it's easy to see what happening, most likely the cable is stretched out too much. I just ordered the part from Ford, the cable and top latch come as one part...about $60.
