Lots of variables there.... just a quick fix in case it is water in the fuel... purchase a couple small bottles of gas line antifreeze.... it's alcohol and basically sucks up any water in the fuel.. add at least two after you have parked the car for the evening. see if there is any change the next day.

Robert

p.s. it could possibly be the beginning of the coil pack failing.

Did you take a compression test? If it fails, then you know it's in the engine. Possible broken valve spring.

How do I replace thermostat on 1999 chevy malibu

Follow the top radiator hose to the engine block, at the end of this hose is the thermostat housing. remove this housing , then remove the old thermostat. Install the new thermostat be careful not to over tighten bolts.
Note!!
First make sure the car is cool. drain the coolant in a clean catch pan, you can reuse it if you keep it clean.

Does a thermostat on a 1999 chevy malibu twist in

No, it doesn't twist in. It's located in a housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose. If you are unsure of how to replace it, leave it to a professional.
