As far as I know there is no way to read codes without a scanner ( at least with anything made after '96 ). your best bet is to go to one of the larger autoparts stores (advance, autozone, pep boys, etc..) most of these places have scanners for store use and will scan your car for you as a free service, and will most of the time offer to turn the light off for you if you would like.

My sunfire wont start. put the key in her and all the lights come on but when i go to turn thee key i get nothing. what could this be? 1996 sunfire,

Hello: You could have a passlock problem. If your battery is good and there isn't any corrosion on your battery cables it may be the passlock system. If you can get the codes read then you would know if that was causing the no-start. You need a good scanner to read the codes.

Probably the sensor. Hair line crack in sensor can cause the check engine light to come on .When the sensor gets hot it expands and causes a fault reading.

Check engine light just came on

If the check engine light is on, then there is a code stored in it. To retrieve, get an OBD-II compliant scanner and read the codes. Clear it after that and see if it comes back. If it does, then read the codes again to see if they are the same.

One can go to autozone or advance auto parts and have the engine codes read for free. Otherwise, you can purchase your own scanner for under $100 from Sears or Walmart or Amazon.com, as examples.

Good luck on this repair babygirl3182.

Trying to read check engine light on my 95 sunfire it has a obd2 plug but the obd2 tester wont read my codes how can i test this with out going to dealer?

Most consumer available scanners read OBDII on 96 or newer vehicles. If your car does in fact have a OBDII plug then all you need is the software in your scanner to be able to read OBDI codes...a 95 is running OBDI. Advance Auto or Autozone might have a OBDI compliant scanner for free...just tell them you have the OBDII port so they don't take up all your time digging for the adapter!

How to read error codes on a 98 pontiac sunfire 2.2l

You can not access the codes unless you use a code reader, this is because of the letter prefix and the number of codes, there are P codes for the engine and trans, B codes for the body, and I codes for some of the other systems in the body. These scanners are cheap, about $30 on ebay.
