The check engine light will come on if the transmission is in limp home mode.Have someone familiar with Benz transmissions evaluate it.We experience a lot of problems with the transmission electronics and inductive pickups mounted on the valve body.

It's a Mercedes, so electrical issues are extremely common. The ML especially of that year is about the most problematic car Mercedes ever produced. It has issues everywhere from short circuits due to the wiring shrouding breaking down over time, to ECMs/ECUs failing without necessarily any good reason to. As there are too many faults on that particular vehicle to mention, it won't be easy to diagnose this one over the internet. You will likely require an auto electrician, and perhaps not even just one workshop to manage all types of issues. My best advice once you've dealt with this one and the vehicle is working is to sell it. You won't stop working on expensive issues with this mark and model.
HI,
There is a problem with your tail lamp assemblies. Mercedes has recognized the problem and came out with a safety recall for this situation. Check with your local dealer to see if they are covered under warranty.
It's the Check Engine LLight. Your truck should be checked by a Mercedes Benz technician using Star Diagnosis computer. If impossible, you can try by checking the emission parts, like gas door, air filters (2 of them), spark plugs (12 of them, yes, twelve, two plugs per cylinder), catalytic converters, gas filter.....
Good luck.
