Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Fault code 37

My 96 JGC Laredo won't start, I only hear a clicking sound inside the vehicle when I try to start it(relay?). Battery seems to be normal. It happened to me maybe twice in the past few months but after a few tries the car would eventually start but today It just won't start, I keep coming back after an hour or so to try to start it but to no avail. I checked for the fault code it showed 37, 3 times it showed the code with just one check. Fault code 37 shows problem with the solenoid right? Can a shorted/grounded wire just be the cause of my problem? or my solenoid(or whole starter) needs replacement?

thanks guys in advance!

I would check the wiring near the starter for any problem, is it tight, not corroded and so on, if no issue is found there then the starter and or solenoid should be replaced, I almost always do both except were the starter solenoid is remote from the starter location like on fords, then test the remote solenoid 1st.

2005 Altima won't start, hear clicking sound coming from fuse box,key stuck in ingintion, won;t turn over, tried to jump start.

the clicking that you hear is coming from the starter relay. sounds like your ignition starter switch or ignition lock cylinder is bad.

My 2007 tundra went dead. The ignition won't start

There are several possibilities ranging from a defective starter, to bad cable connections, to the onboard security system locking out the starter relay, or an aftermarket accessory interfering with the starter circuit, or a locked-up/damaged engine.

I have had vehicles towed into my shop for similar complaints when the only problem was that the customer was using a cheap duplicate key that they had made at the hardware store that did not have the required computer chip in it.

I have also had vehicles towed in where the customer had replaced the battery and did not have good cable connections or forgot to connect one of the wires that was supposed to to get hooked-up to the battery connector.

Then there are the questions: Are you getting any kind of "clicking" noises when turning the key or is it completely dead? If it is clicking, WHAT is clicking? Is it the starter motor itself that you hear or just the starter motor relay? Do you have battery power at the starter "S" terminal when turning the key? If not, is the transmission selector in "PARK"? Does the shift indicator on the dash indicate that the transmission range sensor is in "PARK"? (possible defective transmission range sensor) Are there any fault codes stored in ANY of the modules connected to your onboard computer network?

It is really hard to say without being able to see the truck.

My car start but shutt off inmedialty

If you have not done so pull the engine codes or have someone do it.
The codes will give you a good idea where to start otherwise the first place I would check is replacing the Crankshaft Position sensor. This is not only very common for them to fail but I have 1994 Laredo and 1996 Laredo and both had the same trouble at exactly the same time. In addition I replaced the Intake Air Temp sensor, coolant temp sensor and idle air control valve on the 1994. The clicking is probably relays and is more than likely normal.

This sound is the relay, Is the battery new if more than 1 and 1/2 yrs. you need to replace your battery.
Is your engine cranking when start, if not, the battery need to be replace.

Accord seems to be draining power overnight. only a fast clicking sound when attempting to start. battery 6 months old.

hi, it seems you have a fault DISCHARGE OF BATTERY: make sure there is no lights left ON vehicle inside or out, if phone charger left ON the fast clicking is the starter motor solinoid triing to connect to the starter motor NOT ENOUGH CURRENT TO START ENGINE, sometimes the alternator can have a slight fault, water driping on the contacts on the alternator will flatten the battery, (this is a DIRECT CONNECTION TO THE STARTER MOTOR and BATTERY). naturally the clock, radio, alarm system, all these sytem reduce the battery but this is NOT THE FAULT. charge the battery again it may be just this once. gerry
