If you go to a parts store and ask if they have a belt listing for your car without a/c then you will get a belt easily.(as most cars come with a/c)if not then you and the parts guy will have to figure out how short a belt you will need.you may have to try several different belts before you get one that will work.first is to figure out about how many inches shorter you need to start with.you also need to maintane the proper routing so the pulleys will rotate the same way if it had the original belt on it,

Squeal under hood 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT (3.8 L)

I would start with a belt. While removing it feel how much tension the tensioner has on it, on the 3800 egnine they have a stiff tensioner(sorry I don't have any specs for how much) After you get the belt off you can look at all of the pulleys and spin them to see if the bind or look for stuff stuck in the grooves on the pulleys.
It sounds to me like the belt is streched. I would not recommend one of those gator back belts, they seem to make more noise sooner than a good v notch belt. But thats just my opinion!

How do i remove and install a water pump on a 2000 pontiac grand prix

obviously you need to take off the serpentine belt. realistically you can get at all the water pump bolts. but for more visibility, I took off the coil pack block (held on by two bolts) I also took off the alternator and the piece that the belt tensioner and heater hoses are attached to. not that you need to but you can also take off the power steeering pump. Do not take off the hoses. the pump has holes in the pulley that you can put a deep well socket through. #14 I believe. I just replaced the motor in my grand prix
