Question about 1991 Toyota Pickup

1 Answer

Hello, this may be a couple problems, I am not sure. I'll just take you through the symptoms in the order they started appearing. The vehicle is a 1991 Toyota Pickup, EFI, 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual. Thanks, and here we go! 1. It started idling especially high several month ago, when this started I could gun the gas a little (while in neutral) and the engine would calm down. Eventually this quick fix stopped working and... 2. Especially when the engine is cold, when not moving, in neutral or in a gear with the clutch pushed down the engine "surges", ranging from around 1k RPM and 2.5k RPM. 3. The heat started intermittently working 4. When cold, occasionally it wont turn over immediately, but if I was about 1 - 2 minutes after trying to start it, it starts. 5. It's now starting to overhead, riding the line between safe and warning on the gauge, and on occasion will shoot steam out of the radiator/coolant reservoir overflow (a small hose connects the reservoir and radiator, then a small piece of tubing continues past the reservoir, that's the overflow thats shooting steam. Thanks so much for any help you can offer!!

Well I don't know about the rest of the problems but the heat and steaming more than likely is Ur thermostat. I would change that out to start if steaming continues I would look into a water pump. But start with the thermostat and go from there. Hope this was some help

Car starting by itself without key

I found a page that explains symptoms and fixes for your vehicle. It is not clear but it states "Once started the car won't stall. After the car runs for a couple minutes, the symptoms return after shutting off the engine." The diagnosis for this problem is the PGM-EFI Main Relay Assembly is faulty and needs to be replaced. I will attach the link to the page I speak of it gives a general idea of the location also.

Mirror glass replacement suzuki

Side mirror? You can get replacement mirror at the parts store for around $15 they are pretty nice and very easy to install I have one on my truck. You might have to order it in but it only takes a couple days. They make one that will go to your specific vehicle so it'll be a perfect fit.

Turn key, click from engine compartment but starter does not engage

Hi Thomas,
First things first. Any time you have an automotive question please include the year, make, model and engine size of the vehicle in question. This will help give you the most accurate information I possible can.

To generically address your problem....

A single click every time you turn the key to the start position usually indicates a bad starter. There are a couple things you can check.

1. Make sure there is twelve volts on the large wire to the starter when you try to start.
2. Make sure you can turn the engine over by hand

If those two pan out than tap the starter with a small hammer while a helper holds the key in the crank position (be prepared for the vehicle to start!). If the starter cranks over replace it.

If its a single click and everything goes dead until you let go of the key and wait a couple of seconds, check the battery connections.

A series of rapid clicks when you hold the key in the crank position usually indicates a bad/weak battery.

Let me know if you have any further questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Thank you for using Fixya.com!

I have a 2003 chevy silverado.I drove it to work no problems cpme out at lunch started it up and was missing very bad . when I got off work started it and missing still.

Hello! There is a Technical Service Bulletin that addresses the symptoms your Silverado is experiencing. The Electronic Control Module (ECM) may have lost it's ground connection due to rust and corrosion...It attaches to the right side cylinder head (either in the front or the rear depending on which engine is installed in the vehicle) ***Note; When requesting assistance please include engine size...Lets make sure this ground connection is clean bare metal attaching to same...
Make sure the MAF is clean...Spray with electronic contact cleaner which leaves no residue...Also replace air filter (unless you already have)...After the ECM ground issue is cleared and the problem still exists, I'll take it from there...Guru...saailer

Is there a fuel shut off switchon my 2003 Kia Sedona

No there is not. Ford is the only manufacturer that uses a resettable inertia fuel cut off switch.

If you not getting power to the pump let me know and I'll help you further. If you vehicle doesn't start let me know what you checked or what the symptoms are and i'll see if I can get you pointed in the right direction.

Don,t want to run or idle when cold

They put two different motors in the Explorer 4.0 overhead valve with vehicle Id code of( X) and the 4.0 single overhead Cam and a vehicle code of (E) If your vehicle has a E in the vehicle Id number I would replace the upper intake manifold gaskets. This particular Motor is very prone for the the upper Intake manifold gasket drying out and causing a large vacuum leak. The symptoms are engine will not Idle on dies on cold start up and after the engines reaches operating Temp idles fine .replace the upper intakes gaskets and I am sure you"ll be in great shape. Thanks for using fixya

89 xj6 random hesitation problem under load I sometimes smel a hot elctrical smell during symptom but only in engine compartment and I have replaced fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, coil, wires,...

hi as you know this could be numerous things, i have had a look in my auto data information and what i have come up with is a couple of things you might need to try, air leaks,on air intake system and vacuum system what you can do is purchase a can of easy start, and run engine, on idle just go around the air pipes and vents to see if there is a leak, the engine will idle faster if found, also the fuel pressure delivery regulator, this will need to be checked obviously if you are not getting enough fuel or too much fuel this will cause hesitation with the vehicle..hope this helps
