Question about 1998 Saturn SL

1 Answer

Got a 1998 Saturn. We know that its a blown head gasket. It is spitting oil all over the engine and inside of hood and theres water in the oil... Is there a way to find out where exactly the leak is at without having to bring it into a shop. we are low on cash and are tryin to do this whole process the cheapest way possible. We have someone (but they dont live in town) who can fix it and we know where to get parts but we dont currently have anyone to look at it and we would like to get the parts before the person comes to fix it (this way theres no extra trip or wasted gas).

Engine froze up, what causes water to get in oil?

The head gasket could be blown. Is there a lot of water? Is there oil in your radiator?
There is a chance, it could be condensation. If it is just a small amount of milky looking oil on the oil cap.

How do I know if my water pump is bad. My 1998 Buick regal will not keep water in radiator. I thought it was the heater core but my floors do not get wet so now I'm not sure if its the heater core?

There are a number of possibilities. Does the car overheat? It can be a blown head gasket. To check this, open the radiator cap (not the plastic filler bottle, I mean the metal cap on the radiator itself).
Put your nose close to the opening and smell the water. If it smells of exhaust gas, you have a blown head gasket.
Another check is to pull out the dipstick and have a look at the colour of the oil in the sump. If it has a grey colour, you have a blown head gasket.
The first place to look however is check on the floor after you've driven the car for a while, and see if you can see water dripping to the floor, or if you open the hood immediately after a longish drive, check for steam which could indicate a bad head gasket that did not blow into the water chamber per se.
Steam from a hot engine will also indicate leaking radiator hoses or a leaking water pump.
If you suspect the water pump, again, open the metal radiator cap and fill the radiator to the top. Let the engine idle until it is hot, then rev it a bit. If the water pump is working, you will see the water inside the radiator circulating. Just make sure the engine is hot, else the thermostat will prevent the water from circulating.
An extra bit of information, if you can see the water circulating and also notice bubbles in the water, it is an indication of a leaking head gasket.

1998 sl1 oil in water running hot

If you have oil in your coolant then your head gasket is blown. Be careful, and don't let it fully overheat because you will warp your head and have to buy an entire engine.

My low coolant warning light has come on twice in two days. Each time there was steam coming from somewhere under the hood. I filled it up with GM coolant. I am losing coolant some how. I don't know if...

The best way to find out where the coolant is leaking from. When a head gasket blows, usually there is water in the oil. Turning it kind of white. Or pressurizes the cooling system. But if you have had the head gasket replaced once already, then it probably is not the head gasket. When the steam is coming out from under the hood, raise the hood to see where it is coming from. That will tell you were your leak is.

Hi i have 98 camry it blow white smoke not only on 1st start, but only sometimes.driving up hill and it is rattling and blow white smoke and the car have not enough power.pls any help suuggestion is very...

Sounds to me like the head gasket is blown, but there may be sealant in the system which is making it intermittently leak antifreeze into the cylinders.

A bad cylinder head gasket will also cause a compromise in compression, which will cause a lack of power.

Time to overhaul or replace the engine's head gasket, or replace the engine with one that doesn't have a blown head gasket.

Good luck on this repair.

I have 1998 740i BMW that is overheating. 1) What are the warning signs of a bad water pump? 2) What are the warning signs of a blown head gasket? 3) What are the warning signs of bad timing?

Timing - engine is not sounding right or back firing.
Head gasket - water and oil mixing, see inside water bottle. or open bottle. rev engine when cold, if starts spitting water out while cold like a fountain.
Water pump - Water leaking from side of engine. or when car started and water bottle is open and no circulation is visible could be signs of water pump
Remember - Block radiator lines can also cause over heating problems and lack of water circulation.

Leaking oil put of tail pipe, is the cooling sensor important, head gasket blown how do you know

Never seen oil come from tail pipe (unless a piston has a broken ring or a hole burned in it.) Cooling sensor tells the computer the engine temp and the computer turns the fan on through the fan relay. Very important for it to work. A blown head gasket will make the engine overheat, can cause white smoke from tailpipe, coolant loss and extremely rough running. Also can cause coolant in engine oil or oil in radiator. What you may be seeing may be water mixed with carbon from the inside of the pipe. Excessive water coming form pipe is also a head gasket symptom. A compression test or cylinder leakdown test or a radiator hydrocarbon test will tell you if gasket has failed.

My '99 Cougar heated up the other day and when i parked and popped the hood some gray smoke came out. Now the car over heats a lot and the heater will only blow cold air out

Possible blown head gasket...sounds like it, remove the spark plugs and do a compression test, sometimes you will find water coming out of the spark plug hole with a blown head gasket, pull the plugs and turn the engine over, with the radiator full of water, if water starts spitting out of any of the spark plug's a cracked head, or blown head gasket.

I own a m reg 95 model civic. The car is overheating steam is coming out of the radiator. I tested the cooling fan and it does not seem to come on when the engine is hot. HELP!

I hate to say it but you might have blown a head gasket. Try this- in the morning/anytime, (cold engine) pop the hood and remove the radiator cap. Start the engine. If it bubbles/blows out antifreeze- yep, blown head gasket. Most people think you'll have water in your oil if you do have a blown head gasket. It can blow 2 ways. Exhaust gases into coolant passage (your case) or vise versa (hince the water/antifreeze in oil). Try that- lemme' know
