Question about 1994 Mercury Sable
There are few things that can cause this, one is a defective engine thermostat, to check and see if this is the problem idle the car and put a pieces of cardboard in front of the radiator, if the heater gets hot more quickly replace the thermostat in the engine. The other issue is a defective heater core due to clogging by rust in the cooling system, when the engine is hot fell the two small hoses under the hood that attach at the firewall, they should both be hot, if one is hot and one is cool you have a blocked heater core, you can clear the core by removing the hoses and using a garden hose to back flush the core to remove the clog. If you find that neither of these is the problem then you have a problem with the air diversion door inside the dash that directs air over the heater core or the AC evaporator core, it is called the "Air temperature control blend door" Repair of this problem requires the dash to be removed from the car and is not for most do it yourself mechanics.
