It's possible that you need to have the clutch adjusted or replaced, could also mean that the solenoid is going bad.

Make sure the clutch is adjusted and working properly, with no leaks, and then there is no not much you can do about it. Try shifting just a bit slower. A small amount of crunching is normal because the dogs and grooves have to line up first before the sleeve can slide. It is possible to do what is known as double clutching, where you let the clutch back out in neutral, in order to use the engine speed to synchronize the input transmission speed, but that is a lot of work. The transmission is very expensive because you have to pull the engine and differential first, before you get at the synchros.
Don't forget to check fluid.

Audi a4 1.8 automatic gear not engaging 1st 2nd or 4th. only drives in 3rd

It is in "limp" mode which limits the transmission to only 3rd gear. The transmission fluid level needs to be checked and the "basic settings" need to be reset in the Transmission Control Module.

Sounds like you have worn gearbox selector linkages and I suggest that you get someone to take a look at them PRONTO.

1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. Mileage 132000. 1 to 2 shift normal. Trans. will not upshift into 3rd. gear, goes to 4th. It will downshif to 3rd. from 4th. When the trans. get hot from stop and go...

If tranny fluid is clear and at normal level, then the issue is with the transmission - it is getting ready to go sayonara.

Better get that fix before you get stranded.

Have 1st 2nd and reverse, no drive 1988 model 2 wd

sounds like 3rd gear clutch is out (it might have blew out a lip seal or something)
pull the pan c if there is a lot of black on the bottom of pan (no 3rd = no 4th either) the 3rd gear clutches are engaged along with the 4th gear clutches to make overdrive
if the tcc cable is out of adjustment it mite shift at wot (wide open throttle) max rpm (5000-5500)
if it just 1,2, neutral its probly clutches

I have just bought a 51 plate a3 1.8. Sometimes it wont go into third and fifth gear as it should. When trying to change into these gears it doesn't crunch it just won't let you put it in gear. The best...

The possiblities that come to mind are
1 Bad synchro in transmission 2 bad bearing(s) in transmission input shaft.   3 Bent shift linkage or shift fork (I doubt this, but it's possible)
Only number 3 is relatively cheap.  I'd go back to where/who you bought the car from, if it was that way when you bought it, and ask them to help.  It can't hurt.

Using force is NOT the solution.  If the syncros are bad, until you get them replaced, you'll be better off to determine the RPM difference between 2&3 gears (maybe 800-1000?) and also 4&5 gears (maybe 500-800?) and learn to put a modest amount of effort at exactly the time the rpms fall into that diffference.
Example Say the difference between 2nd gear at 3500 RPM and 3rd gear is 1000 RPM, then when you take it out of 2nd for an upshift to third,  delay until the RPMs are just getting to 2500. If you are on a budget and can't fix the transmission (it's going to be big bucks) you may find you can get pretty good at this.    It is possibly to shift a car this way without even using the clutch, although I don't recommend this and it takes a great deal of practice and luck.
While you have this problem, don't downshift into 3rd,  just run the RPMs down in 4th (say to 2000 or less) until you can shift into 2nd at an acceptable RPM. The least amount of shifting you can do until you resolve this the better.
Another choice until you can fix it, is to just run up the RPMs in 2nd and then shift to 4th, and then forget you have a fifth gear.  This is much better than forcing, it's possible to do more damage by forcing.
Is it hard to get into 3rd from 4th AND 2nd?
