you think both of these are connected ? can the ignition switch be checked before I have to take it to the Lexus dealer ? Thanks

  • betsyburleso Mar 29, 2011

I sure hope so, just hope it works- and fixes the lights too. I have to go out of town soon.. and can only drive in the daytime and don't trust that something might short out . Thanks so much

Get your ignition switch checked. If the ignition switch is getting short, then it will not let the car to turn off actually. On the dial it shows, that car is turned off.But actually the car is not turned off, due to the short in ignition switch and this causes the problem mostly. But if switch checked out, ok then the other possibility is radio wiring harness is getting short, any of the wire is getting loose and this is causing the problem. The radio has to be removed from dash and its wiring harness has to be checked for short in between. ---------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Yes you can check the ignition switch. The ignition switch wiring harness gets power from battery.so with the meter it should show 12 volts. If its not showing, then its faulty or its wires are loose. Also inspect the ignition switch wirings properly, for any burnt /short or cut in between. But fir this the ignition switch has to be removed out.--------------- You can also try one more method. In some cases, the ignition is turned to off position, but the actual position on ignition is stuck to ACC position so due to radio does not turn off.In that case.

Get out a very thin screwdriver (from ACE hardware) with a small flat blade on it, insert it first into the bottom part of ignition and rotated it 360 a couple of times in the ignition to loosen the tumblers, do the same to the top half of the ignition, and once it turn to off by doing this. The radio stops and turns off. Then with your car key, turn it to on and recheck radio and then turn ignition to off and see.If its working properly or again same problem is noticed. If noticed, then its faulty ignition switch. Its not turning towards exact off mode. The ignition switch needs replacing.----------But take care, nothing gets damaged by the flat blade minus screw driver.Do it slowly and carefully.------------
    This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Lincoln con wont stay started new batt new alt batt dies car shuts off wtf?

The harness from the battery to the alternator may be damaged or the harness form the firewall to the alternator may be damaged. Check fusible links by applying a gentle but firm tension on them- if they pull apart, they have failed. The area to check closest for damage is anywhere the harness goes over a sharp corner.

If equipped with an aftermarket alarm, or aftermarket stereo system- disconnect the alarm for now, and verify the stereo or other radio is attached to a switched accesory wire. If they are on a constant power source wire, they will run a battery down fast. as fast as a day or even part of a day if quiescent current draw is great enough.

Sounds like the head unit is bad on your audio system. You would need to replace the entire unit. I'd recommend an aftermarket stereo instead of another Ford stereo.
