Quite possibly a broken timing belt. When it is broken you will have no spark so the motor will spin and spin but never fire up.

Have you checked for any spark at the spark plug?

  • Sid Schmidt Mar 28, 2011

I may have been mistaken the 2004 jeep grand cherokee has a timing chain not a belt so it should not have broken, but to find out for sure I would test for spark. One way to do this is to remove one spark plug wire and if you have a spare spark plug laying around hook the wire to it, next set it somewhere that it will not fall into the fan or any of the pulleys and watch it while someone turns the key. Make sure you are not touching the plug or wire though you can get a shock. If you dont have a spare plug just remove the plug that you unhooked the wire from and use it. If you see a spark than the timing chain is not the problem.

Sounds like the classic IAC motor, when these start failing they will not turn on the engine light. These give you a start stall symptom.

Disconnected battery and now won't start

Won't start as in no rotation of the starter motor and no clicking sound? Or starter turns slowly with the engine? Or the starter and engines turns normally but will not start? Or starter turns normally but engine will not turn?

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee temp gauge high when heat is on

If your "check engine" light is turn on, I suggest scanned the PCM to know exactly what fault code is stored there. Additionally, could be some problem with the "temp sending unit".

Keep us updated.

your transmission is in "limp home" mode, the problem is one of the sensors on your transmission. you need to have an obdII scanner connected to read the codes stored in your vehicles computer. this will tell you which sensor has failed

2004 jeep grand cherokee limited makes a noise

Sounds like a loose belt, Depending on what engine etc., it may need to be changed or if you have adjustment, tightened. When adjustment or replacement done, is a good time to check all pulleys. If your not up to it, an adjustment should not cost too much, few minutes work in most cases, if belt needs changing, price of belt & a little more labor involved.
