How to change a starter

Changing a starter motor is mostly the same for any vehicle, but since you didn't specify what vehicle, here is a generic response.
To gain access to the bottom of the engine where the starter is located, jack up the vehicle and place strong jack stands under the frame. DO NOT USE JUST THE JACK TO HOLD THE VEHICLE UP!!!!!
Locate the starter motor, which will be bolted to the engine. First, disconnect the two wires connected to it, which come from the battery and ignition. Make sure the ends of the wires do not touch the frame or it will short out. Then remove the bolts holding the starter to the engine and slide the starter out.
Slide the new starter in the smae place and tighten the bolts to the correct torque (varies by vehicle). Then re-attach the wires to the terminals on the new starter and you should be done.

the starter is on the driver's side of the engine. There may be an oxygen sensor bracket in the way to accessing it. If so, remove the harness to the sensor using your hands and unbolt the bracket from the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. if you have to follow the battery lead.

Where is the starter located on the metro

Four types of starter motor are utilized depending upon the vehicle transaxle and assembly plant location. Manual transaxle equipped vehicles utilize a conventional starter motor which consists of a yoke, an armature assembly, an overrunning clutch assembly, a solenoid, a commutator end cover, a brush holder and a pinion drive lever. Automatic transaxle equipped vehicles utilize a reduction type starter motor which has, in addition to the components found on conventional starter motors, a reduction gear and shock absorber assembly.

Don't know what size motor you have because you didn't post it so please pick the proper one:

This is for the 4 cylinder motor--

4-cylinder engine starter connections

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. If equipped, it may be necessary to disconnect and remove the EGR pipe to access all the starter bolts.
  4. Tag and disconnect the starter battery and control wiring at the starter.
  5. If equipped, remove the starter bracket and/or heat shield.
  6. Remove the starter-to-engine bolts.
  7. Move the starter away from the engine and down to remove from the vehicle. Some starter may be installed with shims between the starter and engine. When the starter is removed, these shims may fall out. Do not loose them.

  2. Tighten the starter mounting bolts to 30–34 ft. lbs. (39–44 Nm).
  3. Install the starter bracket and/or heat shield, if equipped.
  4. Connect the battery and starter control electrical wires to the starter.
  5. If the EGR pipe was removed, install it.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8. Start the vehicle to make sure the starter functions correctly.

  6. Lower the starter from the engine. If any shims are present, keep them for reinstallation purposes.
To install:
