1. take out the number one spark plug
2. i use a phillips screw driver, and put it in the spark plug hole
3. i use a long handled breaker bar with the correct socket on the fly wheel pulley
4. i turn the pully till the piston brings the screw driver up, and timing marks on pully read top dead center
5. this should bring the number one distributor position on the cap
6. if not you need to remove the distribitor and reinstall to correct mark

How you set the timing


Your engine computer will set the timing as you drive your car. The computer has full control of the timing and monitors it constantly, adjusting it as you drive to get the best performance and gas mileage from your engine. If you have an older car.....you need a timing light....a special 90 degree closed end wrench...I think 1/2" or 9/16".....and a helper to tell you when the marks line up using the timing light.....ohh yeah....you spin the distributer left or right to advance or retard the timing. when the marks are in alignment on your fly wheel and the gauge marker under the timing light....turn off the engine....tighten the distributer hold down bolt, (located under the distributer cap), back tight to hold the distributer haft in place.....then your done..good luck and always work and play safe.

1990 F-150 5.0 302 has no power feels like engion is not running on all cyl.I have replaced plugs wires distrubitor an rotor. what could cause it to strain?


An improper spark plug gap or a cracked spark plug they can crack a little if put in to tight also check fuel filter when u get plugs always check the gap hope this helps also could be clogged fuel injectors if efi system

54 Chevy 235 runns but no power and overheats.Should I have pointed rotor toward spark plug not distributor cap #1.My e-mail is jmincey23@sbcglobal.net


timing is way to slow. are points gap set properly. I think they are set at .016 for used points.
Fireing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4
with timing mark set at top dead center .i think it is a ball on back of engine. distributer rotor should be at #! .

I did a head gasket repair and now i need to set timing for a 350 chevy i can get it running but idles ruff


its hard to say without knowing your year, however, if you have an engine that uses a distributer, the best way is to remove your timing cover, and insure the timing mark are alighned and that your distributer is set to the #1 cylinder tdc, from there it should be a mater of small adjustments to the distributer. hope i was able to help.

I need to set the timing on my 1991 suburban, I need to find the wire you unhook to set timing and then reconnect for the advance to work ok.


Distributer has two sets of wires coming from it one that plugs into distributer and the other comes out as a set of wires that plug in to another set of wires , set base timing after unhooking the set of wires that plug into the other set of wires

When taking the distributor off do i need to set the timing of the distributor


Yes. Roll the engine over onto #1 cylinder TDC and remove the distubuter cap. Place a mark on the body of the distributer inline with the rotor point before you do anything else. This mark may already be there, but if not, it needs to be permanent, such as a tiny chisel cut. Now you can withdraw the distributer. When replacing, it may have to engage the oil pump drive, so be careful you engage this properly. If not engaged, the distributer will not go down fully. As you inset the distributer, align the rotor with your mark. Make several attemps until you get it in pace and your mark lined up.You will notice the distributer shaft will turn as you insert it so you need to allow for that. Use a timing light to finally set the ignition timing.

TDC stands for Top Dead Center, however it is only to set the cylinder number ! at TDC, if yu know where the timing marks are align the crank pulley mark to the "0" of the timing mark, usually this can be achieved by setting the crank shaft doel pin to twelve 0 clock position.

remove and plug vacume line on the distributer and find timing specs on the motor in the vehicle using timing light hook transducer cable to no# 1 cylinder set the idle to manufacturers specs make shure motor is warmed up to operating temp now point thr timing light at the timing plate on crankshaft pulley start the engine and watch for the mark on the harmonic pulley see where it is at when running now if the mark is not lining up with sugested degrees from manufacturer then u must loosen bolt on distributer only loosen 1/4 turn now rotate distributer clockwise or counterclockwise this will make the mark on the harmonic ballancer allign with manufactures required timing specs after aligning marks tighten distributer and unplug distributer vacume line and plug it back into distributer. and test if u need anymore specifics plz read manual carefully good luck
