Question about Volvo 850

Have a 1994 volvo 850 turbo white smoke emitting from exhaust and oil cap and dip stick oil is milky and coolant is not holding in reservoir a friend of mine looked at it and said that water was getting into engine from the turbocharger he said all i need to do is purchase a turbo rebuild kit and that will fix my problem others say its a blown head gasket if so how much does it cost to repair gasket and is it worth repairing

1. Your problem is the cylinder head gasket cracked.
2. Forget about bad turbocharger at this moment.
3. You need to buy a new cylinder head gasket and new cylinder head bolts. Check the cylinder head flatness when removing. Rectificate the cylinder head surface if necessary! Also change the engine oil & filter. You need new engine coolant, of course. If you do it yourself the approximate cost of the reparation is $250.

    Note: Whenever timing belt is replaced, tensioner pulley lever pivot [8] must be lubricated. If tensioner body has been leaking or pushrod has no resistance or is seized, renew automatic tensioner unit.

    Note: A restricting washer should be fitted (when engine is cold) to automatic tensioner pushrod [9].





    Here you have the cylinder head instructions:



    Tightening sequence




    Stage 1 = 20 Nm.

    Stage 2 = 60 Nm.

    Stage 3 = 130 degrees.

Do not continue to operate. Operating an overheated engine will cause the engine to fail.

After the engine has cooled,
Confirm that the engine has coolant.
Confirm that the reservoir is full to the mark
Start engine and confirm as engine gets warm cooling fan at radiator turns on

Confirm that the rubber engine belt is working
Put in car heater to full hot and blower on.
Confirm heat is hot from car heater.
If heater is not hot possible water pump failure or air in coolant system keeping the coolant from circulating.
Allow to cool completely.
Remove cap start engine and observe coolant flowing at or near cap. Observe bubbling or exhaust gases coming from radiator

Check for water in oil by pulling dip stick
  • White smoke from the exhaust pipe
  • Overheating engine
  • Bubbles in the radiator or coolant overflow tank
  • White milky oil
  • Significant loss of coolant with no visible leaks
If milky likely a blown head gasket

My car has white smoke coming from the exhaust


he causes of white exhaust smoke can vary; however, it is common to see white exhaust smoke when first starting a car, especially on cooler days. This is generally steam caused by condensation. As the engine warms up and the condensation dissipates the white exhaust smoke (steam) is no longer seen. If excessive white exhaust smoke is present well after the engine warms up, it is necessary to have the car inspected for possible internal coolant leaks. Indicators of an internal coolant leak include billowing white exhaust smoke accompanied by a sweet odor or a low coolant reservoir level. An internal coolant leak can also contaminate the engine oil giving it a frothy, milky appearance. Even small amounts of coolant entering the combustion chamber will produce white exhaust smoke.
One of the main causes of white exhaust smoke and coolant loss is a cracked or warped cylinder head, a cracked engine block, or head gasket failure caused by overheating. A cracked head may allow coolant to leak into one or more cylinders or into the combustion chamber of the engine. Dirty coolant, a poorly maintained cooling system, a low coolant level, or a non-functioning cooling fan can cause engine overheating. In addition, engine wear can eventually cause the gaskets to lose their capacity to seal properly allowing internal coolant loss. Intake manifold gasket and head gasket failures are two of the most common sources of internal coolant loss caused by engine wear.
Never remove the radiator cap or coolant reservoir cap while the engine is hot or running as it can cause serious injury; always allow the car to cool down completely first. Checking for a low coolant level in the reservoir is the first step in determining if coolant loss is causing the white exhaust smoke. If the coolant reservoir is at the proper level but excessive white exhaust smoke is present, a cooling system pressure check is required to determine where, if any, coolant leaks are located.

White smoke from the exhaust may be an indication that coolant is leaking into the combustion chamber. This could be caused by a faulty cylinder head gasket, a cracked or warped heat or cracked block. Check the coolant level, and check to see if the oil dip stick has a milky look.

If only at start up it'l be moisture condensation in exhaust if all the time your head gasket is on it's way out check condition of oil if milky on dip stick or on underside of oil filler cap defo head gasket

If your turbo has coolant passages for cooling then it is possible. Most likely the issue is failed head gasket. You need to do a compression check or a cylinder leak down test to rule out a failed head gasket.

Volvo S70 Turbo..Just had head gasket replaced. I'm getting white smoke out the exhaust, white smoke out the dip stick and pressure at the oil fill cap. The oil at the dip stck seams a little foamy. Oil...


Not good. Someone didn't put it together right or something came apart. It's burning oil. Check the inside of your tail pipe. If it's wet and oilly then you are burning oil. Oil foaming is from compressed air getting to it. You will have to recheck everything done when head gasket set was replaced.

Volvo 850 smoke coming from exhaust manifold


Not to worry. Run the engine up to operating temp before jumping to conclusions and let the heat burn off any excess oil. A leaf will not do any damage.Do not let the engine overheat while idling and if the oil light comes on switch off immediately.
The smoke from the exhaust is oil deposited by oily assembly hands just burning off. It should dissipate after about 15 minutes at most.(or 5 miles' drive)

I assume you mean exessive smoke?
White smoke = watersteam - usually cracked cylinderhead gasket
Replace gasket
Black / dark smoke preferrably visible when accelerator is let up after acceleration = oil - usually enters the cylinders through worn valve seals.
Repclace seals (can be done without lifting cylinder head)
