You need to remove all the cowling on the steering column around the lock. Check if there are any bolts or screws securing the lock into its holder and remove these. Ensure that the steering lock is not engaged or clamped by the steering column and put the correct key in the lock. In the ACC position, (or it might be another position) you should be able to depress a pin or tongue in the lock cylinder and this should allow you to extract it from the housing. Unplug the switch from the bottom of the lock cylinder and the job is done.

Electronic Park Lock (EPL)/Ignition Lock Cylinder Control Actuator: If the vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission and a floor mounted console gear shift, it has an ignition lock cylinder control actuator system in the steering column. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator purpose is to prevent the ignition key from being turned to the OFF position when the transmission is in any position other than PARK and the vehicle may still be moving. The column ignition lock system consists of an ignition lock cylinder control actuator, and a park position switch that is located in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator contains a pin that is spring loaded to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when the vehicle transmission is not in the PARK position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the PARK position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column. The vehicle it is equipped with a floor mounted console gear shifter, and has a ignition lock cylinder control actuator system in the steering column as an added safety feature. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator systems purpose is to prevent the steering wheel from being locked when the transmission is in gear and the vehicle may still be moving. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator system consists of the BCM, the lock cylinder relay, and the ignition lock cylinder control actuator. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator contains a pin that is spring loaded out to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when vehicle speed is above 5 mph for 15 seconds and the transmission is not in the Park position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the Park position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column. For situations where the vehicle must be towed, the system can be overridden by pressing a release button that is reached through an access hole located on the under side of the steering column. First, remove the black plug covering the hole.

GM has had some problems with this , If you have the console shifter there is a micro switch that when put into park a linkage pushes on this micro switch closing the circuit to ignition lock cylinder control actuator allowing you to remove your key ! These linkages fall out causing this problem ,an have electrical wiring problems as well ! I fixed a 2006 Chevy cobalt that had this same problem by getting a used shifter assembly at the auto salvage year ! cost $20.00 . There mite be a access hole under the bottom of the steering column with a release button up inside !

How do i replace a ignition switch for a 1992 mercury sable


The ignition switch on Mercury Sable is integrated into the ignition cylinder. When this switch fails, you may need to purchase a special switch from a Ford dealership if the switch used a wireless transponder.


Instructions for NON Functional Cylinder (Cylinder will Not Turn or No Keys ):
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the steering wheel.
3. Using locking pliers, twist the cylinder cap until it separates from the lock cylinder.
4. Using a 3/8 in. (10mm) diameter drill bit, drill down the middle of the ignition lock key slot approximately 13/4 in. (44mm) until the lock cylinder releases from its breakaway base. Remove the lock cylinder and drill shavings from the lock cylinder housing.
5. Remove the retainer, washer, ignition switch and actuator. Thoroughly clean all drill shavings and other foreign materials from the casting.
6. Inspect the lock cylinder housing for damage from the removal operation. If the housing is damaged, it must be replaced.

To install:
1. Replace the lock cylinder housing, if damaged.
2. Install the actuator and ignition switch.
3. Install the trim and electrical parts.
4. Install the ignition lock cylinder.
5. Install the steering wheel.
6. Connect the negative battery cable, then check the lock cylinder operation.


Instructions for Functional Cylinder ( Cylinder will Turn with Key):
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Turn the lock cylinder key to the RUN position.
3. Using a 1/8 in. (3mm) diameter wire pin or a small drift, depress the lock cylinder retaining pin through the access hole in the upper steering column shroud (under the ignition lock cylinder) while pulling out on the lock cylinder. Remove the lock cylinder from the column.

To install:
1. Install the lock cylinder by turning it to the RUN position and depressing the retaining pin. Insert the lock cylinder into its housing. Make sure the cylinder is fully seated and aligned in the interlocking washer before turning the key to the OFF position. This will permit the cylinder retaining pin to extend into the cylinder housing.
2. Rotate the lock cylinder using the lock cylinder key, to ensure correct mechanical operation in all positions.
3. Connect the negative battery cable.


Door Lock:
When a lock cylinder must be replaced, replace both sides as a set to avoid carrying an extra set of keys.
1. Remove the door trim panel and watershield.
2. Remove the clip attaching the lock cylinder rod to the lock cylinder.
3. Pry the lock cylinder out of the slot in the door.


To install:
1. Work the lock cylinder assembly into the outer door panel.
2. Install the cylinder retainer into the slot and push the retainer onto the lock cylinder.
3. Connect the lock cylinder rod to the lock cylinder and install the clip. Lock and unlock the door to check for proper operation.
4. Install the watershield and door trim panel

Trying to get the ignition tumbler unit out of a 1993 Ford Taurus at the junkyard. worked at it most of two days but no luck yet so I must be missing something having never tried this before.


Ignition Lock Cylinder REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Functional Lock The following procedure applies to vehicles that have functional lock cylinders. Such cylinders either have a key available or known key numbers from which a key can be made.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Turn the lock cylinder key to the RUN position.
  3. Using a 1?8 in. (3mm) diameter wire pin or a small drift, depress the lock cylinder retaining pin through the access hole in the upper steering column shroud (under the ignition lock cylinder) while pulling out on the lock cylinder. Remove the lock cylinder from the column. Fig. 1: Using the key, turn the ignition lock cylinder to the RUN position, then depress the retaining pin using a wire pin or small drift 86878085.gif
    To install:

Non-Functional Lock The following procedure applies to vehicles in which the ignition lock is inoperative and the lock cylinder cannot be rotated due to a lost or broken key, unknown key number or a lock cylinder cap that has been damaged and/or broken to the extent that the lock cylinder cannot be rotated. 1986-90 VEHICLES
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering wheel. For details, please refer to the procedure located earlier in this section.
  3. Remove the two trim shroud halves after removing the three attaching screws.
  4. Disengage the electrical connector from the key warning switch.
  5. Using a 1?8 in. (3mm) diameter drill, carefully drill out the retaining pin, being careful not to drill deeper than 1?2 in. (13mm).
  6. Place a suitable chisel at the base of the ignition lock cylinder cap, then, using a suitable hammer, strike the chisel with sharp blows to break the cap away from the lock cylinder.
  7. Using a 3?8 in. (10mm) diameter drill, carefully drill down the middle of the ignition key slot approximately 1 3?4 in. (44mm) until the lock cylinder breaks loose from its breakaway base. Remove the lock cylinder and drill shavings from the lock cylinder housing.
  8. Remove the retainer, washer, ignition switch and actuator. Thoroughly clean all the drill shavings from the casting.
  9. Inspect the lock cylinder housing for damage from the removal operation. To install:
  10. Replace the lock cylinder housing if it was damaged.
  11. Install the actuator and ignition switch.
  12. Install the trim and electrical parts.
  13. Install a new ignition lock cylinder.
  14. Install the steering wheel. For details, please refer to the procedure located earlier in this section.

Ignition


the actuator inside the sterring column that the lock cylinder turns is boken, this is a very complex job and is not for the home tech without a factory service manual.

How do i remove key lock cylinder on steering column to replace with new one?


Turn ignition key/lock cylinder to the ON position. Insert a thin screwdriver into the slot adjacent to the switch attaching screw boss (right-hand slot). Depress the spring latch located at the bottom of the slot to release the key/lock cylinder. Remove the cylinder.

Removal & Installation

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the steering column shroud and lower the steering column.
3. Detach the ignition switch electrical hardness connector.
4. Remove 2 nuts retaining the ignition switch to the steering column housing.
5. Lift the ignition switch upward to disengage the actuator rod from the switch and remove the switch.


To install:

> When installing the ignition switch, both the locking mechanism at the top of the column and the switch itself must be in the LOCK position for correct adjustment. To hold the mechanical parts of the column in the LOCK position, move the shift lever into PARK (with automatic transmissions) or REVERSE (with manual transmissions), turn the key to the LOCK position, and remove the key. New replacement switches, when received, are pinned in the LOCK position by a metal shipping pin inserted in a locking hole on the side of the switch.


6. Engage the actuator rod in the ignition switch.
7. Place the ignition switch on the steering column housing and loosely install 2 retaining nuts.
8. Move the switch up or down along the column to locate the mid-position of the actuator rod lash, then tighten the retaining nuts to 47-64 inch. Lbs. (5-7 Nm).
9. Raise the steering column into position at instrument panel. Install steering column shroud.
10. Connect the negative battery cable.
11. Remove the locking pin, connect the battery cable, and verified that the engine will only crank in PARK and NEUTRAL. Also check to make certain the start circuit cannot be actuated in the DRIVE and REVERSE positions.

Removal
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove the steering column shroud by removing the four or five self-tapping screws. Remove tilt lever (if so equipped).
  1. Remove instrument panel lower steering column cover.
  1. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
  1. Rotate ignition key lock cylinder to the RUN position.
  1. Remove the two screws retaining ignition switch.
  1. Disengage the ignition switch from the actuator.
Installation
  1. Adjust the ignition switch by sliding the carrier to the switch RUN position. NOTE: A new replacement switch assembly will be set in the RUN position as received.
  1. Check to ensure that the ignition key lock cylinder is in the RUN position. The RUN position is achieved by rotating the key lock cylinder approximately 90 degrees from the LOCK position.
  1. Install the ignition switch into the actuator. It may be necessary to move the switch slightly back and forth to align the switch mounting holes with the column lock housing threaded holes.
  1. Install retaining screws. Tighten to 5.6-7.9 Nm (50-69 lb-in).
  1. Connect electrical connector to ignition switch.
  1. Connect battery ground cable. Check ignition switch for proper function, including START and ACC positions. Also, make certain that the column is locked in the LOCK position.
  1. Install instrument panel lower steering column cover.
  1. Install the steering column trim shrouds and tilt lever (if so equipped).
