which one is the fan relay. i have bought a new one already.

  • mlm_mcbryde Mar 28, 2011

We unplugged one....one fan comes on with engine cold and stays running...the other two do nothing. We unplugged the battery for five minutes...no change. What now? Also, can't find the relay at the bottom of the radiator. Do you have a picture?

  • mlm_mcbryde Mar 28, 2011

We have found the three relays. We unplugged the first one and plugged in the new relay and the fan on the inside of the radiator came on and stayed on with the engine cold. Should both fans have come on? The other two relays did nothing. Are there any other relays? Could it possibly be a wiring issue?

There are 3 relays and 2 fuses that control the fans and are located under the black plastic cover (main fuse center), driver side under the hood behind the washer solvent bottle.

Maxi fuse 6 provides power to terminal 1 of the relay at all times, terminal 4 goes the the fan motor, fuse D3 has power with the key in run to terminal 2 and the PCM provides the ground to make the fan turn on.

With relay 1 removed and the ignition key on you should have battery voltage at relay terminal 1 and 2. If not check Maxi fuse 6 or D3. Then make a 12 Gauge jumper wire with an inline fuse of 30 amps and jumper the relay terminals 1 and 4. The fan should turn on. If it does try a new relay. If not or the fuse blows then the fan motor is bad and needs to be replaced.

All 3 relays control the Fan operation. You can either connect 12 volts to Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 and see if the Relay clicks, or start the vehicle and listen and feel each relay to see if they all click on, or just 1 or 2 clicks on. Replace the one that doesn't click, or replace 1 at a time until the problem goes away.

If your A/C is on, the fan closest to the A/C compressor will stay on. When the vehicle is at operating temperature, the other fans should come on.

If the relay is getting warm, your fan may be going out. With the key out of the vehicle, spin the fan by hand. Does the fan spin with ease, or is there resistance?

Location of radiator fan relay 1992 ford tempo gl

The radiator cooling fan relay in ford Tempo gl has been integrated into the CCRM (Constant Control Relay Module) this is the black box fixed to the left strut tower with the big cable harness on it.

This relay box is commanded by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) it´s linked to every sensor in the car. (It's located behind the fuse panel next to the steering column.

The PCM supervises various conditions, including the signal that the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor sends and power up the Fan Relay into CCRM to activate the Cooling Fan.

This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Hi!!
Check the Relay Pack located to the left of the radiator (standing in front of the engine) there are 3 relays together, the one closest to the radiator, is the Cooling Fan Relay.
Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa!!

Coolant fan relays

if there is power to the plug then the relays are good. chances are that the thermo sensor to the fan is faulty.

Where is the radiator fan switch located on a 1992 vw cabriolet i need to replace and cant find it

IT IS LOCATED ON DRIVER SIDE OF ENGINE BEHIND THE THERMOSTATE HOUSEING IT HAS TWO WIRES YELLOW AND BROWN HOPE THIS HELPS .
--------------------------------
there is a fan control relay under the dashboard with the other relays check that then check the temperature contreol module theat is located in the engine compartment
--------------- there is a 2 speed sensor/sender on the lower part of the radiator, facing the driver. It's on the tube at the end of the radiator. The fan motor has three leads, an orange, which should be hot, and is monitored by a 40 amp fuse located either on top of the battery, or with the fuse modules/relays under the dash. (according to the book, I still can't find mine, it may be NEXT to the battery. The negative must be thru the chassis, so it would be a good idea if, at temperature, with two hots going to the motor, look for a shorted ground. If one of the hots isn't, then the sensor or 40 amp is bad. After those are ruled out, it's the motor.
