What type of Mazda, Turbos that wont spin up can be seized, have broken vanes/rotor shafts, stuck open wastegates. Visually inspect the turbo, if it has a waste-gate lever you should be able to move it with your hand. In any event take it off and give it a good once over inspection

Take it to a good auto electrician or a Toyota dealer to get it plugged into a diagnostic computer. The engine light is warning you of a bigger engine problem and the limited revs are to stop you doing any more damage. That's why the turbo will not kick in.

My 2000 vw beetle turbo the turbo wont kick in

On the Turbo there is a small vacume pipe that leads to the intake, ensure this pipe has not come off or become damaged.

Otherwise it may be possible that there is an internal problem with the turbo.

When the turbo kicks in at about 3000rpm it will then lose power and wont go anywhere

Check all connections on your turbo & intercooler pipes. If any pipe joint comes apart it will result in a major power loss.

Turbo lags, or wont engage smoothly.

the golf is renowned for a 1/2 sec lag in the turbo (except for the diesel which is quicker and more powerful all round,2 secs faster from 30 to 60.)you could chip the car (volks tuning) and make it much better...if you had a clutch problem, the engine will spin, wheels would be stationary.....

Revs erratically

sounds like the rev limiter is kicking in to keep the engine from over rev damage, there should be a way to get the limiter disabled or perhaps get the turbo building boost sooner.

Turbo works on the engine from the moment you start it. It does not kick in as people use to say. Loss of power and acceleration is caused by many different things, get diagnostics done and you will know exactly.

It seems like the turbo does not kick in to full potential. Is there a way to open up the waste gate?

you need to check the pipes that connect the turbo to the exhaust manifoilds these are common to leek at the gasket if there is to large of a leak turbo wont work properly the waste gate on these motors is actuated with oil pressure if the turbo pedistal mounting seals are bad turbo wont work right ethier waste gate isn't adjustable

LACK OF POWER

Does it smoke? Could possibly be sticking EGR valve. Remove and clean, or blank off and try running without it. If it runs better, this is your problem.
