  1. Most tie rods consists of a Ball-Joint assembly. After removing the tire, you will need to pull the Tie-Rod Nut Retaining Pin before trying to take off the Tie-Rod Ball Joint Nut.
  2. After the Nut is removed, you can use a ball-joint separator to separate the ball-joint from the Hub assembly.
  3. After the Ball-joint is separated, mark the position of the old Tie-Rod where it connects to the Rack and Pinion assembly, and then remove the tie rod using a wrench.
  4. Installation is the reverse of disassembly.
  5. Once it is back together, you will need to get your vehicle aligned.

You need a tie rod exterior tool, about $80. This tubular tool fits over the tie rod, after you disconnect it from the upright and rod end. The tool is a worthwhile addition to your tool kit.

Need to replace front outer tie rod end. How do you do this? Is it simple replacement? 1989 Ford Festiva


Locate the tie rod end, and remove the nut that hold it in place.

Using a hammer and prybar, lodge the prybar under the tie rod end, and against something else, and pry up gently from underneath, while striking the area of the knuckle that it connects into with appropriate force. The tie rod end will dislodge. There is also a tool for this, if you'd rather use it. It looks like a tuning fork, and is called a "tie rod remover". Its use is self-explanatory. You can rent a kit to do this from AutoZone or Advance, the rental is about $50, IIRC, and you get your money back when you return the tool.

After having done that, loosen the locknut on the back of the tie rod, and count the number of threads that you have to turn the tie rod end to get it off from wherever it's installed. This is VERY important.

Once the old one is off, thread the new one on EXACTLY the same number of turns. This will ensure that your vehicle's alignment is about as close as you can get it without taking it to an alignment shop. Tighten the lock nut, reinstall the joint end into the hub, and torque the retainer nut. If there was a clevis or pin, reinstall it.

How to install inner and outer tie rods on a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica - I waqs told buy a trusted local mechanic that I need to replace 3 of the 4 tie rods. Might as as well replace all 4, but how hard is it...


You will need to rent or borrow in inner tie rod tool but here are the directions.
1. Break the jam nut on inner tie rod to outer loose.
2. Remove nut from outer tie rod attaching it to steering knuckle.
3. Use hammer to get tie rod out of knuckle.
4. Unscrew outer tie rod then jam nut
5. Remove clamp from boot and slide off inner tie rod.
6. Using side cutter or hammer and chisel break off metal clamp on the inside of inner tie rod boot.
7. Using inner tie rod tool, unscrew inner tie rod from rack and pinion
8. Reinstall parts and have it aligned

Impact bent the right front tie rod. how can it be removed for straightening or replacing?


First loosen the jam nut with a 21mm wrench. Then use vise grips or whatever you have to make sure the rod can be turned that goes into the outer tie rod. Then remove the cotter pin and 17mm castle nut. Strike the hub where the tie rod goes through with a hammer repeatedly until the tie rod pops out of the hole.

Then simply unscrew the tie rod end and replace it. If the inner tie rod end is also damaged, or the rod is damaged you will need to replace them as well. Inner tie rods have a special tool to remove them, see your local auto parts store.

Remember, replacing an outer tie rod end changes your cars toe (alignment). You will require an alignment after replacing it, even if you think the car drives straight.

Am changing the inner tie rod on a 2000 cirrus with a 2.5 and cant figure out how to get old one off


to get the inner tie rod out you need an inner tie rod tool, it's a long tube that fits a 1/2 inch drive rachet and there's different size adaptors that go into the end of it to fit over the tie rod, find the right size put into tool, put over tie rod and brake it loose, reverse for installtion.

How do i change inner tie rod , do i need a special tool.


i think steering gear has to be removed to get rubber bellows off to access tie rod.

Disassembly
  1. NOTE: Drill out mounting holes in holding fixture with a 9/16 inch drill to allow the power rack and pinion steering gear assembly mounting bolts to fit.

  1. Remove tie rod ends (3A130).

  1. NOTE: Steering gear does not use rivets or roll pins between the inner front wheel spindle tie rod and rack.

    Remove bellows along with power steering gear rack tube (3K762).
  1. Position power rack and pinion steering gear so that several steering gear teeth are exposed. Hold steering gear sector shaft (3575) with an adjustable wrench on end teeth only while loosening ball joint nuts.
Assembly
  1. Expose several steering gear teeth and hold steering gear with adjustable wrench.
  1. Tighten each front wheel spindle tie rod separately to 90-110 Nm (67-81 lb-ft).
  1. Thoroughly clean steering gear and steering gear housing bore of any foreign material. Any abrasive material is extremely harmful to high-pressure oil seals.
  1. Apply Steering Gear Grease C3AZ-19578-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESW-M1C87-A to groove in front wheel spindle tie rod where tie rod bellows clamp to front wheel spindle tie rod and uniformly to inner diameter of tie rod bellows before installation. This allows for toe-in adjustment without twisting tie rod bellows.
  1. Install tie rod bellows and power steering gear rack tube. Make sure power steering gear rack tube is positioned as shown.

Disconnect the outer tie rod and remove,then remove boot,then use special tool to remove inner tie rod. You will then have to have it aligned. You can use a tape measure to get it close enough to drive,just mark one of the grooves in the tire so you are measuring the exact same points,measure from tire to tire in the front of front tires then take a measurement at the rear of front tires and adjust the outer tire rods until the measurements are pretty close to equal.

There is a tool that you can use that will make it easier for you. To get to the tie rod end, remove the wheel and take the outer tie rod end loose from the hub. You will have to use a hammer and hit the socket where the end goes into the hub to free it up. Once you have the tie rod loose from the hub, loosen the nut behind the outer tie rod end. Count the revolutions as you unscrew the outer end off and write te number down so you will know how far to put it back on. This will save your alignment. Now, the end that is still there is your inner tie rod end. You will have to undo the bellows boot to get to the nut. The tool will slide over the end and secure onto the nut. Now you just unscrew this and replace with you new inner tie rod end.

you can rent the tools for free when you buy the tie rods from autozone, o'reilly's etc. tool loosens tie rod.
