Question about 2003 Dodge Durango

2 Answers

I have a 2003 Dodge Durango with the 4.7 liter V8 and the all wheel drive and the 4 wheel drive will not disengage. Please help!!! I have tried switching it from 4 wheel hi to AWD while driving and also while stopped and I have also tried backing up, but it still seems as if it is locked in 4 wheel drive. When I am turning it is very tough and there is also a clicking sound when I am backing up.

Legally, you can not put an older motor into a newer vehicle due to emissions laws. You can always put a newer engine (usually manufactured to meet newer emissions specs) into an older vehicle, but not vice-versa. There's issues with the computer and vin # when you change from one factory engine to a different type as well.

Yes. They should both be 46RE transmissions and the bolt patterns and the plugs should be the same.

How to tow a 2003 5.7 liter dodge durango

i am glad you asked
thats i the problem with the electronic select FWD system
when towing a FWD you should put both selectors in neutral this frees the transfer case and the drive shafts
how ever with the electronic system i dont know if it stays in neutral when the car is disconnected from the battery.
so you can make some tryles
  1. put the car in neutral in both selectors "gear and FWD" while the car is running when all the warning bell and stuff have gone off turn off the car
  2. now see if the car can be pushed or towed while the battery is connected
  3. now disconnect the battery and follow step 2
  4. if this works then all is well
i know when towing a FWD car u do need to put the transfer case in neutral to prevent damage
if you have the owners manual check under towing
if you don't, contact your local dealer and see what they say
hope this helps
