Question about 2001 Pontiac Montana

1 Answer

My 2001 Pontiac Montana keeps locking the doors by its self. When I unlock the doors via the remote or the switches the car instantly locks them again. This only happens about 50% of the time we are in the vehicle. We can be driving down the road and all you hear is the actuators trying to lock non stop. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE TO START LOOKING TO FIX THIS PROBLEM? I'm worried my actuators are going to wear out but more important i don't want my wife and kids to get trapped in the vehicle if something happens. Thanks Chaise

I have a few suggestions on where to start but the honest answer is that this clearly sounds like an electrical issue and these can be a real pain to trace down. It definantly sounds like the problem is in the key less entry system for the car or the wiring coming off the actuator. .

If this key less entry system was not originally installed on the car by pontiac then your first course of action is going to be to locate the control module. Typically these are installed under the drivers side of the dash. Once located you need to start by making sure that all of the wire connections are clean and tight and there are no bare parts of the wires showing. Then you are going to need to trace the wires back to where it taps into the door lock actuators wiring behind the door panel for the drivers door. (I'm thinking that there is a short that is hitting metal and completing the circuit causing actuator engagement). If all that checks out good then you have an internal module malfunction and are going to have to have it replaced.

If this was the original stuff that was made by pontiac then it gets considerably more difficult. Proceed as described for the aftermarket stuff but then you are looking. at at a more expensive module. I hate to say it but a dealer should be able to go in with their scan tool and check for problems with the key less entry module. That is going to require going to a dealership and paying a diagnostic fee. But if your inspection doesn't turn anything up that is the only way I know to accurately determine if the module has failed. I hope this at least gave you an idea what you are looking for. These issue are never easy to find but taking your time and you can work through it. Good Luck.

Door locks keep engaging while I drive.2001 Montana extended van.I leave it in the garage unlocked and come back later to find it locked. What is the problem?

most gm cars engage the door locks when the vehicle is in gear and is up to 12 miles per hour. Not aware of an ease way to prevent the locks from engaging when moving. Really can be annoying but not such a bad thing these days with car jacking and other crimes to have the doors lock.

2000 pontiac Montana passenger sliding door will not open and lock is stuck in the lock position.

If you cannot manually unlock the door, use a rubber hammer and firmly rap the door at the striker/lock area while manually sliding the lock/unlock switch to unlock,it may take a few tries but should unlock.DO NOT lock the door again until you have lubed the lock assembly and are happy with it's operation. If it's an electric lock fail to unlock/lock,with the door open use steel wool on the door post electrical door contact pads once in a while.

Door lock will not unlock from switch on 2003 pontiac montana

How do you know the replacement switches were good? These actuators work in a series...One could be defective, causing the others (including drivers door) to not work...Also try cleaning all contact points with PB Blaster, and wipe dry...Hope this helps.

2005 pontiac montana drivers door wont lock with remote but will lock from inside switch or with key on outside...it WILL unlock with remote as well as all other doors...

put your ear to the door and try to open it with the remote, if you hear it trying to open, then most likely you door lock actuator is bad and needs replacement. It may have disconnected itself from the door lock lever as well, but i suggest opening up the door panel to better ***** the situation. It all points to the actuator.

Doorlocks keep locking even when out of the

Dave, it would appear that at one point one of the manual locks were forced either to unlock or lock and has now repositioned the nuetral point at a different location on the locking rod, hence, sending false readings to the control unit to either unlock or lock, I would try this, close all doors and manually lock them see which lock lever look unlike the rest in that position, this will be the culprit and have to be reset on the rod behind the door trim panel. This advice is as best as I can give without manually seeing the car. Drive safely
