The ignition switch should be on the underside of the steering column -- it's connected to the switch key cylinder by a rod. The switch may have burned contacts or loose connectors or it may just need adjusting (i.e., the rod may not be properly engaging the switch).

Check your relays, fuses, and especially your ground cable on the battery side and the block, try jumping a ground from the battery to the frame or body and see if it makes a difference

I have a 1999 Olds 88 that won't start.

If you have no warning lights, either a fuse is blown or the key switch is not powering the computer and the rest of the ignition system.
If you check the fuses and all are in good condition, I would suspect the ignition switch.

Pass key wont turn in new ignition cylinder but dummy key will

The keys probably differ in length. Matching teeth will not reveal this.

I turn the key, and the instrument panel lights up, but the car does not turn on. So i try again and it starts usually on 2nd or 3rd try. Also today, it turned off while at idle. What could it be???

Hi. Check your ignition key assembly since it is not responding when you turn the key to start position. Check your idling since car turn off while on idle. You might need to adjust the idling.

When I turn the key in the ignition, nothing

It could be a bad ignition switch, do you have instrument panel warning lights when you try to start it?

Won't turn over

You probably need a new battery. Starting takes a LOT more current out of the battery than the dome lights, etc.

The last couple of batteries that failed on me gave me no warning.

Diagram on a pontiac grand prix

I have 07 Pontiac Grand Prix, the wrong key was inserted into the ignition the other day. Now when I try to use the correct key it will not insert completly in the ignition, goes in until last 1/4in of key. Im stuck, I bought the new lock cylinder but how do I get the old one out? I cant get the key to insert all the way so I cant get it to the "On" position, it will not turn at all. The key that was inserted in error is whole and nothing is missing it seems like there is something stuck. Any help would be appreciated...
