I have an 87 Comanche and it's the same way. If it ever gets too hot or too cold and won't start, try slipping it to neutral. As far as having a high idle and a long crank time, i'd suggest giving it a tune up and changing out your plugs.

Engine light comes on heat blowed cold air and car runs hot and wont crank now

Number 1: get the code; even if they light turns off an on, the code will be stored in the computer.

It sounds like you could have a variety of issues and more information needs to be given. How is the car running? Does it run & idle perfectly or does it stumble?

Engine idles high cold or warm. I have checked the crank key-way and all is good.

too fast idle. it is too high right?
but how high? the 4wd model has
a dash tachometer. post that reading.
this has long list of cause.
The hot engine ,idles at 800 rpm A/C off.
the ECU controls that, if it dont idle a 800 hot.
then , : (im skipping cold due to harder to diagose and rpms not stated)

1; Is the coolant temp,
180F min, to 200F max , is it?
if not all EFI cars fail idle her.e.
2: next, is IAC or ISC failure.
the IAC must only be open cold.
the ISC is electric and operates under ECU control
and a 2 fast idle means the ISC has lost control.
it can lose control any time you have air leaks in the intake.
illegal.
the main page on idle is here
http://www.fixkick.com/IDLE-AIR/idle-index-home.html

the 98 specific page is here26 ways to fail. here.
http://www.fixkick.com/IDLE-AIR/16v-idle.html

even a loss distributor base clamp (bad service)
can cause idle to fail.
1: ISC(electric) dirty, clean it.?
2: bad thermostat.
3: IAC (a pure thermo device) stuck open. (my 96 was)

96 Toyota 4Runner sputters when starting when hot only!

how about the fuel filter. I didn't see this on your list and it should be done every 20000km and the air filter. I think its a fuel filter. not the pump. could be the coils but I would start cheap and change fuel filter first. when the pump is cold it pumps with more psi to blow passed the clooged filter after warm it is weaker and has a hard time pushing through the clog

chk/test yr plugs also. If it starts to break down then chk soliniod & coil as u may be getting the start of a bigger problem. yr symptoms r showing signs of an elecrical problem. rough warm ups r the signs. c/be choke sensor also causing roughness..

Colorado Transmission and high idle

The coolant temp sensor could cause the problems.
If the sensor says the coolant is 15 degrees several things would happen.
The only way to know is to be able to attack it when it happens which would be hard to predict. You could replace the sensor but may never know if it is fixed or not.
The check engine light should have come on when that code was set.

Since day one, my 2007 Dodge Ram Hemi always starts like its in a cold engine cycle. In other words, it starts at a high rpm and steps down in increments for about 20 seconds. Hot, cold no matter. It...

Yes, it is normal for a vehicles idle to be high when first starting up, no mater what the temp. If it`s already warmed up to operating temp, it will still have a high idle for a brief moment when starting. Usually this is the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor. Located in the air duct down from the air filter, and before the throttle body.

Main proplems from IAT sensors are to low of an idle at normal temp, or the idle never comes down after warm up.

Your gas milage problems would stem from Oxygen sensors, plugs, wires, timing, etc...

Here is a quick test, just incase your OBD II (Computer, PCM..) memory module is not working properly. With the engine running, using the tips of your fingers, tap on the PCM, if the engine stumbles or stalls and sends troubles codes that light up your check engine light while tapping, if it does, check to make sure all wires are securely attached to it.

At first the truck idles extremely rough when cold cranked. This went on for a couple of days, now the truck will not start at all. It hits every once in a while while repeated cranking on cold start. ...

Sometimes on cold days if the cranking amps on the battery are low, then it will be hard for the vehicle to start. Also, check the oil level. If the level is low it will create a hard start and rough idle for the vehicle.
