How to replace rack and pinion on a 1984 dodge 600

disconnect the power steering lines from the rack. remove the roll pin or bolt that fastens the steering colume to the rack. makes sure the steering wheel is in the straight ahead position and stays there. raise vehicle remove wheels. disconnect the outer tie rod ends from the spindles. support the sub frame, unbolt the sub frame bolts that hold it to the car. you may only have to undo the rear ones and loosen the front ones there will be 4 of them. lower the rear of the sub frame enough to remove the steering rack. make sure the rack is in the centered position like you want to go straight ahead. then install in reverse order. when connecting the rack to the steering colume make sure the master slot is lined up properly or they won`t match up. then fill and bleed power steering system.

Vt commodore rack boots

Vt commodore steering Rack boots always rip and tear, the racks always tend to leak from the internal seals.
So if this the case with yours I would recommend you just get a reconditioned steering rack and fit it but once the rack is replaced you will also need to do a wheel alignment.
steps to change rack .
1.raise vehicle on hoist
2.remove front wheels
3.remove tie rod end split pins
4.undo tie rod end nuts and inner nuts on rack ends
5.release tie rod end from hub.
6.centralise steering wheel and remove keys from ignition
7.count the number of turns on each side that tie rod come off and write down .
8.undo the 2 metal pipes that go into the rack feed and return lines and make sure u have container under the vehicle to collect old fluid.
9.undo the 13mm nut and bolt that mounts the rack to the steering colum shaft.
10.undo the 2 *19mm bolts and nuts that mount the rack to the crossmember.
11.gentle wiggle the rack and it will come away.
12.follow these steps in reverse when fitting new rack.,make sure you replace the oring seals . will need to get a wheel alignment done..

Had new rack and pinon boots replaced on 2000 3.5 RL now power steering seems to pull a lot to left. Repairman said I need an alignment? Do you normally have to get an alignment when you get new rack and...

Yes it is very possible the tie rod adjustment was not completely returned to it's previous position (not perfected by eye) after removing to install new boots; note be sure to ask that inner tie rod seals are ok, otherwise the boot replacement is only a temporary shield for the leak.

Steering wheel won't return

you could have a problem with the steering rack bushings causing the steering to bind and not return.check the power steering fluid level,it could also be a pressure valve in the rack that is not working properly or a worn out rack &pinion assembly in which case the rack will have to be replaced as you have to if the bushings are worn out.also check the steering colume rag joint which is the universal joint in the colume which may be worn out.

How can i change the rack and pinon on a 2000 hyundai sonata

the K-frame has to be lowered in order to slide the steering rack out. this is after you have disconnected the hydraulic lines, the tie-rod ends, the exhaust (flex) pipe, the steering column shaft universal (at the bottom of the steering column), the stabilizer bar links, and the 4 17mm bolts holding the rack to the K-frame.
