You should really read the light before you reset it, but just disconnecting the battery and waiting a few minutes will reset it but if a major system has a fault you'll need to fix it as the light will come right back on. The coolant senser open or disconnecdted and the throttle position senser and the airflow meter will all instantly code if thier disconnected or open. The map senser will also, if it has one.

ObdII cars sometimes need to be reset with a scanner. Most code readers will alson clear cades ( like the ones they have at the discount auto parts stores that the store clerk will connect to your car to read the codes) This same scanner will also erease the codes bit like I said earlier, major faults will reset even just turning on the key. A cheap code reader ccan be aquired for less than $100 but unless you plan on doing this type of work on a regular basics I'd just go have the codes read and cleared the discount parts stores read codes for free and recommend parts to repair the codes indications. The problem with thier reconmendations is thiers other reasons for the codes to be set other than the senser going bad and be real warily of any code theat says something real expensive needs the be replaced as the systems are intergrated and falts can be triggered and the problem does'nt stay cause of a fuel change the fuel cap loose or even a change in the fuel your buying. An example can be that the 420 code indicates that the catalist is malfuncitioning and needs to be replaced. Just running in a hard rain storm with the catalist cooled by the extra water under the car can set this code and nothings wrong with nothing. So I always inspect the part suspected maybe unplug it and replug it a few times to clean their connection and then reset the codes with a scanner or disconnecting the battery ( this does'nt work for all codes on all cars) and then run the car to see if the code comes back either right away or after driving awhile. I'm the daylongdrive and I answered you the first, time and hope you find your reason for the light coming on and don't unnessarily buy replacement parts that you don't need. Most of the sensers on you car if the car not run too hard or ran in extream conditions will last the life of the car as their made to.

How do you turn off engine light on a 2009 Mercury Marquis

The Check Engine light must be reset using an OBD-II code reader. Dealers have them as do repair shops. Places like AutoZone will read the codes for you, but normally will not reset the Check Engine light due to possible liability issues. You can purchase a code reader at these places to do this yourself. Make sure you get one that can read and reset the engine light. The very cheap ones cannot reset the Check Engine light.

The check engine light is on my 1995 Saab 900s. I can not find a techician with the correct scanner. How can I turn off the light?

There are three ways to reset a check engine light.

1. Disconnect the battery, wait approximately 30 minutes, reconnect the battery. This resets the cars computer which also reset the check engine light. On newer OBD (on-board diagnostic) compliant vehicles this usually does not work. See step 2.

2. Reset using an OBD II reader. When you hook an OBD II code reader up to your vehicle, you can reset the computer using the code reader.

3. Fixing the problem. Generally the check engine light comes on for a reason. Usually it is emission related (sensors, gas cap) or electrical (faulty wiring). In this case the way to reset the check engine light is to fix the problem

How to reset check engine light?

Go to your local O'Rielly's or Autozone. They will tell you the code and reset it for free. Otherwise take the negative battery cable loose for about 10 min. This will clear the ECM, but you won't know what tripped the light! Best Wishes, TJ

How to do I reset the maintenance service light on my 2007 Chevy Trail Blazer

there is no light for emissions testing on this vehicle. there is a ses light that can come on, indicationg a problem with the engine or transmission electronic system. this will require a scan tool to pull trouble codes. there is another light called oil life monitoring that needs to be reset after oil changes, which I suspect is what you are seeing. here is a picture of the light and the instructions for resetting.,

The Engine Oil Life System calculates when to change your engine oil and filter based on vehicle use. Anytime your oil is changed, reset the system so it can calculate when the next oil change is required. If a situation occurs where you change your oil prior to a CHANGE OIL SOON message being turned on, reset the system.
After changing the engine oil, the system must be reset as follows:
  1. Turn the ignition to RUN, with the engine OFF.
  2. Press the information and reset buttons on the Driver Information Center (DIC) at the same time to enter the personalization menu.
  3. Press the information button to scroll through the available personalization menu modes until the DIC display shows OIL LIFE RESET.
  4. Press and hold the reset button until the DIC display shows ACKNOWLEDGED. This will tell you the system has been reset.
  5. Turn the key to LOCK.
If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message comes back on when you start the vehicle, the Engine Oil Life System has not reset. Repeat the reset procedure.
